I got mine in December 2012 so sadly the warranty is already over.. I fail to see that I pay for a new display although it is a problem which is in some way caused by Apple itself. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's correct, you have to try to replace the display in warranty.
Besides I know that warranty years are two. If you bought the iphone directly from apple , the two years are guaranted by apple itself , if you bought it from other resellers, the first one is guaranted by apple, the second one by the reseller.
