I had the same not charging problem with my iPad Air after iOS 7 update ' the problem is not with the ipad or the lead ' it is the plug ' the large bulky plugs will not charge your ipad following update !!
You MUST use the newer smaller flatter plugs .
Something apple should state before anybody installs the update.
Guaranteed to work .
Hope this helps.
I had problems charging my ipad 4 after the os7.1 update. I had the original usb cord. but wasnt using the original part that goes in the wall. I was using my phone. and I guess it doesnt generate as much power. but when I found all the original pieces. it statred charging! !
I burned through 3 12watt chargers in 3 months on my ipad4. Still covered under apple care. They replaced the iPad, and guess what, I killed another one in a few weeks. Still charges with a phone charger. All I know is they lost out on selling me 15 iPads for cash registers because of the problem, but they tell me it's very unusual. Hmmmmm

I encountered the same issue as many here...after an IOS 7 download to my IPad 4, usin any of my "cheap E-Bay obtained" charge cords gave me the same "this is not approved hardware" message and appeared to no longer be charging the unit.
For a few scary moments I actually thought might have somehow "fried" the IPad's charging input diodes. I'm also a Ham Radio operator who has "smoked" more than my share of ham equipment over the years by applying higher inpu voltage to such equipment than it was designed for.
Or, to put it another way, most electronic equipment these days doesn't work very well once you "let the smoke out" 😮
However, a quick trip to a nearby Apple store solved the problem. One of their friendly "Geniuses" there ran a full diagnostic on my IPad (which was fine, by the way) but they also indicated that the new IOS-7operating system apparently is looking for an imbedded chip in the charge cord...one that apparently only Apple sells.
So, after a quick purchase of a new "Apple approved" charge cord ($21 and tax here in Canada) all is once again well.
Lesson learned: Save yourself a lot of headache....buy your IPad accessories only from Apple.

or Apple approves. It has been mentioned quite a lot, but worth repeating. Avoid the $1.99 store!
I have only original Apple chargers and none work after the ios 7 "upgrade".
I have tried every suggestion I could find from the resets to the "ping" from find your ipad app, to putting a book on top of it. Nothing works.
I sometimes get a message that say something like "this device may not be supported".
I didn't get what that meant until these posts about embedded chips in the newer chargers.
If these chips are new since I purchased my iPad 3, does that imply that Apple is forcing me (unintentionally or not) to upgrade my charger?
While I wouldn't like doing that, it would still be prerable to having a dead iPad.
I'm also plagued with a non-working home button since the upgrade. I'm using the virtual home button now so I can't do the usual reset (hold off & home button) so have done the uninstall - reinstall of the ios via iTunes. No luck.
Any other ideas (sacrifices to the apple gods?).
Thank you
The chip is embedded inside the Apple or Apple approved Lightening plugs, not the charger. iOS7 needs to find the chip. Does not affect 30 pin connectors.
Your iPad needs a visit to the Genius Bar or repair shop.
