iPhone 4 won't hold charge after iOS 7 update

Hello,

I'm hoping I can get some help with this issue. I updated my iPhone 4 to the new iOS 7 software and now it will not hold a charge. The update was completed just fine last night. I left the phone on the charger all night, but when I awoke this morning I noticed the battery percentage was showing 20%. I was confused and checked the charger; unplugged it and plugged it back in. The phone recognizes that a charger is in the port (audio feedback as well as visual), but the percentage slowly decreases. I also tried using two other chargers to see if it was in fact my charger that was at fault. Same results. Inevitably, the phone reached 0% and shut down. I never had this issue before upgrading to iOS 7. I had iOS 6.1.3 before upgrading and I routinely charged my iPhone 4 daily without any issues. I've tried everything I know to do; any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Nirusuresh,

Off course I tried many times DFU mode (10 seconds pressing Home and Power buttons).

Then I get iTubes logo asking to connect to a computer. If I do it and try to restore I get "error 2001" after waiting for iPhone.

If I disconnect it from wall charger it switch off immediately, then when reconnected it shown iTune logo again.

So no solution my iPhone keeps as a dead brick.

@Jon Pritchard1

Are you saying only people with unlocked phones are having this problem?

That's brilliant! They had me pay 30€ just so I can get a code for unlocking it in iTunes and take the phone with me for living abroad.

However, if this is true, will they fix it? My phone is dead thanks to paying 30€ to unlock my iPhone 4 which has never had any problem in two years and a half?

⚠ I POSTED A VERSION OF THIS 2 DAYS AGO AND APPLE TOOK THE POST DOWN ⚠

I have to conclude I'm at least close to the truth.

My observation across multiple forums/posts I'm getting a sense this could be a twofold problem:

1. In some cases iPhone 4/4S IOS 7 is causing the overcharge protection failsafe to be set and stored in NVRAM. This is why the phone won't charge unless you go through the DFU process.

2. For some, presumably older, iPhone 4/4S within a serial number/production date range when #1 occurs then it's possible for a higher amp source such as a AC wall charger to burn out the integrated charging module.

I don't understand what those things are nor if they make sense.

After letting my iPhone rest 36 hours the screen finally displayed the "no battery" logo. I got it to connect to iTunes to make a recovery reset. Took me through the whole process saying "your iPhone will now restart, let it stay connected and iTunes will tell you when done", then crash again...

Second time went better but now the screen is black and background lit, like some other people have experienced.

I have a solution that absolutely worked for me. after ios 7 update, iphone 4s charged very very slow. After several weeks of thinking i would have to replace, I found the problem. Its push notifications. I had so many going (twitter, groupme, facebook, etc.) that they were drawing more energy than my charger could support. I turned these push notifications off in settings/notifications and walla! it charged just like my other devices and I havent had a problem since. Hope this helps.

Like the others, same problem here.

However ... one thing different for me, may be that while the phone won't charge or otherwise connect to my MacBook Pro, which is running OSX 10.8.5, the iPhone has no prob charging or connecting with my office Mac, which is running 10.7.5.

So maybe the problem isn't the phone's OS, but the computer's OS?

--> Can downgrade my software on my laptop to 10.7.5? Then I could use my phone just like before!

I've read through all the above and while some of them sound similar to my situation, it appears nobody is having the exact same issue, so I'll share mine with you all:

I have an iphone 4s in great condition and I updated to ios 7 within the first few days it was available. I dont remember the exact date, but suffice to say that i've had it for over a month and, aside from the standard glitches and the lower battery life, it has worked fine overall.

I woke up yesterday and found my phone to have a dead battery. This has been standard operating procedure since ios 7 in that a fully charged phone generally dies overnight. Somewhat annoying but not overly concerning as I simply plug it in the charger and everything is eventually back up and running. But not this time.

Since plugging it in yesterday morning, the phone has gone through many different strange occurances. When plugged in, it showed my normal lock screen, allowed me access to the phone and showed a 100% charged battery. However, the networks said "searching" and closer inspection showed the date to be set, oddly enough, to Dec. 31 1969. Then, as I took the phone away from the cable for closer inspection, it immediately turned off and would not turn on with any combination of buttons. So, when not plugged in to something, the phone is completely off and nonresponsive to any buttons.

The next step is to plug it into my mac and see whats going on, right? Well, at first, when doing that, it simply set off a continuous loop of flashing apple logo, then restart, then flashing apple, then restart. With no input from buttons being registered. Plugging it back into the wall again gets me access to my lock screen again, but apps are useless as the networks are not working...

So then I tried a DFU mode restore. I plugged one end of cable into computer, then held down the home button as i plug the other end into the phone and finally get some progress of the "connect to itunes" image on the phone and recognition from itunes that a phone is in recovery mode. I thankfully choose to restore, only to get my hopes up and be disappointed as I get "error 2001" about 6 times in a row.

After reading some of the above, I decide to try my girlfriend's Mac, which is not yet on Mavericks, but in the end, same result with the error 2001. Now after going into DFU mode, the only screen I can get to, even when plugged into the wall, is "connect to itunes".

So now here i sit, with a phone that has worked fine for the last two years without so much as a hiccup. I've jailbroken it time and again throughout ios 5 and 6 and have had it unlocked for the past 5 months. Everything was working fine even with the 7 update, until out of nowhere the phone has become utterly unusable. There have been no recent drops, no recent encounters with liquid and nothing else out of the ordinary to set this off. So, completely out of the blue, my phone just decides that it no longer wishes to operate.

I'm likely out of Apple's warranty coverage, so - what can i do??? What genius fix have I not yet tried? Who is going to step up and be the hero on this one???

Cheers.

Skelly,

I can tell you that my situation was similiar and I troubleshot the same way you did, then all of of a sudden i realized that even though my social media apps were not on, they were still recieving information by way of push notifications. So although the apps were not on, the battery was still being used up by these. So much that it slowed uop my charge, and the few times it got down to zero it took a very long time to get to 100%, like days. So I turned all non essential apps off in the settings menu and my battery returned to normal. I think its a compatibility issue between the hardware on the iphone 4s and the ios7. Never had a simiiar problem before the update. One thing for sure, Apple will be no help, they are busy counting nickels.

I updated my 4S last night with the new IOS7 and likewise no charge this morning, no connection the my laptop. i have tried to contact apple and request a chat or phone call, but when you do you are asked for the serial number off your phone!!!! Really not funny as the phone is dead and cant access it. What do i do, and how can i get in touch with Apple?

This is the last Apple product I will ever have, once my contract is up, Im off to Samsung!

I'm Having the same problem!!! my iphone 4s is dead! i nearly have it for about 1 year now...

and yes, i bought it new and unlocked from a third-party seller, but i've never had any issue before, i upgrated to ios 7 about a month and some days now, but this started a 6 days ago when suddenly i couldn't charge the phone anymore. at first i though it was the usb cable, so i used another one i got from my ipod, but then i realized something was wrong, since it took me a hard time trying to charge it up, This time it went only to 27%, it just didn't go any further...now when i plugged to my cpu sometimes it just turns on with a charge of 4% and then dies again...

It's just so frustating!!!

If anyone knows whats going on please let me know!!
