I have this network problem with both my iPhone 4S and iPad 4 Cellular and my WiFi never greyed out so far on neiter.
Also, the 3G signal strength has dropped on both devices and now it fails too.
However, I have noticed that on some routers it works just fine, so my conclusion is that the problem is the compatibility with some wifi chipsets the routers use.
I could only test this on my router, on an Asus USB-N13 B1 adapter (set up as Access Point), on a hotspot in Vienna Airport while waiting for my flight, on the 3G Vodafone RO network and on my mother's router. I have used as a test, the game Solstice Arena which requires a constant connection for the entire match (which lasts for about 10 or 15 minutes). I have played several games for a total of an hour on each of the setups.
So far, I have these results:
Trendnet TEW-633GR ver. 1.1R : Chipset: Atheros AR5416 + AR2133 - NOT WORKING
TP-Link TL-WR841N ver. 8.x : Chipset: Atheros AR9341 - WORKING
ASUS USB-N13 ver. B1 (set up as AP): Chipset: Realtek RTL8192** - NOT WORKING
Vodafone RO 3G network in a full signal dots area - NOT WORKING
Vienna Airport AP: ???: ??? - WORKING
My proposal is to create an "iOS compatibility router database", so if it's not too much trouble, please post here your router's brand, model and revision number and if it works or not.
Until Apple admits this wifi issue and releases a fix, we can go buy the cheapest router in this compatibility list, just to be able to use our devices around the house. (a TP-Link router like I bought for my mother's place is around 30$).
Try "WAP only" encryption mode on router. ( Not WAP2 mode or variations.)
Works for me...
Dear all,
I decided to do this reply for help everybody. I´m from Argentina, I have an Iphone 4s 32GB purchased on June 2012.
When I updated to Ios 7.00 no wifi issues. Last week I updated to 7.0.2 instantly starts wifi issues, over heating and stopped working. I was tried every I read in this post and others and nothing change. I Tried hard reset to factory settings and nothing. I am sure that the problem is with Ios 7.0.2, because the problem start at this moment.
Anybody knows if Apple will release a fix for this bug?
Thanks for all your comments and We can try to help togheter.

The wifi issue (intermittent drop outs at both work and home) started on my 4s around the time ios7 upgrade was released but definitely before I upgraded. The issue was intermittent and I usually managed to reset using the airplane mode. Then the wifi option button greyed out and I went online to discover the best way around this was to set airplane mode & do not disturb, then reset, then remove do not disturb and then switch off airplane mode. This worked, so I had wifi and I went ahead and upgraded to ios 7.0.
And then the wifi issue resurfaced. Used to manage by switching to airplane mode and back.
Then also managed to upgrade to ios 7.02.
And since then my wifi (greyed) has never ever come back, despite repeated resets (reset network settings) and reboots.
Booked a Genius Bar appointment for today, they were running an hour behind (no apologies) and could only tell me it was a hardware problem and since I purchased the 4S in Jan'12, hence out of warrantly and I could pay GBP£135 for a refurb'd replacement!
My wife's ipad 3 seems ok, my son's iphone-5 is fine for wifi but is suffering (imessages not sending). I am in the market for an ipad mini, or was. And I was also considering upgrading to an iphone 5s soon.
So dear Apple, I am a lifelong MS Windows user. I used to the love the blackberry for functionality (emails especially) and before that the Sony Ericsson was my preferred phone/camera hardware. My experience of the iphone has been that the choice of Apps is great but you have a tendency to push, or actually FORCE, your own idealogies onto us (e.g. forcing us to use just one itunes per iphone, yet everytime I connect my iphone to any other pc, e.g. at work, just cos I need to recharge the battery which is dying, then it wants to import all my photos. Why wont you all the same for the music, is it because you get revenue from the music but not from the photos?); I digress. Dear Apple, sort out this mess once and for all. I paid good money for my iphone and now it does not do "what it says on the tin" because a crucial component has failed. My mobile plan has some restrictions so I cannot update any of my Apps without wifi.
I understand from reading posts here and on other sites that my wifi hasnt just disppeared but has actually been blown out by ios7. So no upgrades or bug fixes will resolve this issue for me.
Useless bit of kit then! Sounds like I may have to resolve to Andriod although my experience of Samsungs (wife and other son) is equally as frustrating!
What is the tech world coming to?
That is beautiful. I'm with you, I hope Apple helps us....
I have an iPhone 5 and using IOS 7. Everything worked fine for the first week, but now my WI-FI and Bluetooth have quit working. The WI-FI is grayed out and will not turn on at all. The Bluetooth just spins and never connects to anything. I have reset network settings, total phone reset, reset by holding home and off button, and even restored my phone to factory defaults and then restored via iTunes. Just great!!! I want Steve Jobs back!
Same issue here with iPad2. If this is their plan to force us to upgrade our devices they better think twice. I'm a long time Apple fan and my next tablet will be Android. Thank Apple.
I'm sorry, but I have a real problem thinking this is a router compatibility issue. The very same router that gave me flawless service before 7.0.2 is now performing miserably? And, furthermore, it has somehow chosen to manifest itself only on devices running 7.0.2? So, if it is a router compatibility issue, if I was able to leave the hospital and somehow stumble across a router that presented no issues with my iPad, then it is only that way due to the recent upgrade and the onus is still on Apple to fix this.
Version: 7.0.2. (11A501)
Model: MD512LL/A
Router: D-Link DIR-628
Hardware version:A2
Firmware version 1.24NA
P.S. An admittedly cursory search of D-Link's website did not reveal any issues. I'd be interested to learn if anyone else has better results from a more vigorous search.
I had decided to WAIT before installing iOS 7, but this morning discovered that my iPhone was in RESTORE mode, and I had no choice. Ugh.
I have iphone 4s and i was really very happy until iOS7 after thatthe same for me at first was in and out.
Now stay grey and i cant to nothing i try everything , combo restarts , settings reset etc
Nothing and i notice that battery is runing of more quickly now.
Apple must do something about it ASAP
well said !!!
I hope they listen otherwise i will buy a Samsung and never trust Apple again!!!
No i will not play the game from Apple to pay another 199 for replacement this is robery I will go to other brands
It is definitely a hardware issue. I took my 4s to an apple store this morning bathe genius there said "there is an unknown compatibility issue between os7 and some 4s models" If your phone is under warranty they will replace for free if not they will replace for $199. Mine was under warranty-- a few other folks in the store had to pay the $199. Good luck- good business practice would suggest that Apple replace the phones-- given that their upgrade is causing the issue on their hardware. It should not be pushed off to the consumer.
Still no word from Apple, but I reeaaaaally hope it isn't a hardware issue, otherwise I'm stuck with a lemon. Let me add my experience to the growing list of wifi misery.
I just picked up a used 4s for a good price, in near mint condition, very well cared for with no technical issues whatsoever. The seller had added a fresh install of ios7. My last 4s had ios6 (lost it) and I was eager to try out ios7. Little did I know what was in store for me! The problems started when I got home and tried to connect via wifi. It found my network but failed to connect while I was going through the initial setup. I tried multiple times to connect, restarted the router, restarted the phone, finally got a connection, finished the setup and thought I was good to go. Only when I started using the phone that I realized the wifi is VERY buggy! Wifi seems to connect and disconnect at random intervals, with the spinning wheel constantly appearing on the menu bar.
I don't have the grey out issue, but even when I do manage a connection, it only stays on for a few minutes. I'm really not able to do anything via wifi without the connection dropping out mid download. Every time. Turning it off and on sometimes fixes it for five minutes or so, before it cuts out again. The worst part, no downgrade to ios6 available! So I'm stuck with a half functioning iPhone with no recourse but to wait for a software fix that may or may not ever be released! And if there's no fix and the antenna is burned out, I might as well flush this iPhone down the toilet.. come on Apple, wake up!
Even Apple Insider has published an article on this problem:
So I seriously hope Apple will now start waking up and come with a response for all us now with a broken iPhone.
So far I've been posting in 3 threads about this issue. Are there more? Should we all stick to one?
