IMAP support broken in iOS 7?

I am having issues with my IMAP accounts after upgrading to iOS 7. Changes to my Inbox done on other IMAP clients are not properly reflected on the iPhone anymore, e.g. deleted mails or moved mails are still visible on the iPhone. I could not find a way to force a refresh of the Inbox, but the only way to get in sync again with the IMAP server is to delete the account and then add it again.

Anybody else experiencing a similar issue? Is there a workaround for this problem?

I just updated to iOS 7.0.3 last night and this morning I noticed that emails that I had deleted off of my iPhone last evening were still on my Mail client (Maverick) on my iMac this AM. In doing some testing it appears that an email I delete from my iMac will appropriately wind up deleted off of my iPhone however, an email that I attempt to delete from my iPhone stubbornly remains visiible on my iMac so it appear to be a "one way street" in terms of what is not functioning appropriately.

I updated 7.03 yesterday for no good. The same problem persists. Delete does not success. Odd enough, even if I the numerous spam and unrelevant messages from my inbox with some other computer, PC in my case, they vanish there but still appear in my iPhone 5. Somehow iOS 7 keeps them in memory either in the phone or some hidden place at the server.

Disgusting behavior from Apple who does not even acknowledge that they are working with this problem. This will be My Last Apple play tool. I need the phone for business, not to experience stupid graphical pseudo updates deteriating working. Very costly game from Apple to customers.

I just updated to 7.03 tonight. Deleted and recreated my account for the third time. No joy. Emails just will not stay deleted nor does the Mail client reflect any changes made on the server, e.g. Emails having been moved to another folder. Three updates, and mail is still broken. I've started looking for an alternative email app but nothing looks promising so far.

We have reset IMAP and cycled INETD on the server side and the problem persists for me on iPhone 4S/7.03 combination.

Behavior is as follows:

Select email, swipe left, select trash - email disappears, app shows notification of checking for email, message reappears.

Select edit button, select email, select move to -> Trash - email disappears, app shows notification of checking for email, message reappears.

Select email, swipe, select more, select move to -> Junk - email disappears, appears again after checking mail

Select edit, select message, select move to -> Junk - email reappears after checking for mail.

----

Setting Push/Fetch to manual has no effect on problem

Setting Trash to "on iPhone" in advanced settings has no effect on problem

Manually moving message to alternative IMAP folder (eg "spam-client") does not solve problem

Not using SSL

Mail folder has many folders underneath - I believe this may be related to the speed/timeout of checking. Since my inbox and mail folders are large, and the app attempts to read state at every change, it is feasible that it is failing to complete the query in time and thus falling back to the last known state.

Apple Developer/Support: If that is the case, remove the "instant check" on delete/archive of message and this problem should clear up.

I've had the same problem (using 7.0.3). After seeing msgs that this might be a local cache issue I did the following on iPad and iPhone and it seems to help with the reappearing msgs problem:

I changed "Deleted Mailbox" from my IMAP server's deleted folder to the local Trash on the iPad or iPhone.

Now when I delete messages individually they do not instantly reappear. But unfortunantely when I mark and delete several msgs they still do reappear.

I connect to my own server using IMAP over SSL and it runs uw-imap.

I just wanted to chime in here with another data point. I note that several of the folks reporting the problem are running UW_IMAP servers, but I'm running Mailtraq mail server and seeing the exact same problem.

But for me, an even bigger peeve is the time it takes to check for mail after upgrading to IOS 7.

I admit to being a pack rat - my inbox contains nearly 6,000 messages - and I strongly suspect that one or both of these problems is tied to the fact that the mail app is now querying the server for the status of every message in the inbox, multiple times, every time it refreshes.

Looking at the server logs from an IOS7 inbox refresh, first it asks the server for the status of all the messages, then it asks for all the ones that are flagged as seen, then it asks for all the ones that are marked as deleted, then it asks for all the ones that are flagged, then it asks for all the ones that are flagged as answered. Then, and only then, does it actually refresh the display on the phone, showing only the subject line for any new messages. But it's still not done! It apparently does a bunch more stuff before finally - up to several minutes later - actually displaying the first couple of lines of the each of those new messages.

And it repeats this entire song and dance every time it refreshes.

Boy oh boy, no wonder it takes forever to do anything, and little wonder that it may be timing out and falling back to its cached message inventory if any of those multiple queries takes too long.

So, to everyone that's experiencing this problem: How large is your inbox? My guess is that this problem doesn't affect anyone who maintains a relatively small inbox, and could probably be resolved by the simple expedient of letting us choose how many messages to display on the phone, as we used to be able to do up until the arrival of IOS7. Even if the Mail app insists on doing all those queries every time, they should be a bunch faster if it's only querying 50 messages at a time instead of a hundred times that.

My inbox is pretty small, actually... in fact, it's 2.8MB at the moment, but it's usually less than that.

A colleague of mine said he thought the issue was that UW IMAP isn't dropping the IMAPd session as expected, so there are eventually loads of open sessions, and once they're closed there's proper syncing. After closing all sessions manually that seems to have solved the issue, until I again check mail and open sessions and it reverts to being a problem again.

I don't know what make my ISP's IMAP server is. Its address is imaps.saunalahti.fi

The size of the inbox might indeed be a factor. My inbox is around 1500 messages.

For some reason, trashing the messages works on my iPad 4 but not on my iPhone 4S (with exactly the same settings and mailbox). And even on iPhone 4S, trashing the very first message in Inbox is successful (without the message re-appearing a couple of seconds later, as happens with any other message but the first).

I'm not sure that's the problem. It seems that IOS7 Mail opens one server connection per folder that you open on the phone - if I open nothing but my Inbox, it only opens (and reuses) one session. It's also unclear what might be "expected", as AFAIK there is no standard for how long an IMAP server should wait before closing idle connections.

That said, Mailtraq's default is to close idle sessions after 600 seconds. I've reduced it to 30, and will see if it makes any difference.

Total time for a single inbox refresh (not including the 30 second disconnect delay):

IOS 6: 12 seconds

IOS 7: over 3 minutes

That's progress for you.

The size of the inbox might indeed be a factor. My inbox is around 1500 messages.

... trashing the very first message in Inbox is successful (without the message re-appearing a couple of seconds later, as happens with any other message but the first).

My inbox is only 230 messages.

Interesting observation on the first message...it took a few days until I wanted to delete the first message, but I did that just now and you're right, the first message in the inbox did not reappear after being deleted. I actually did it twice, deleting two messages one after the other. Then after deleting the now-fourth message, that one reappeared. I wonder if that's why I thought that the 7.0.2 upgrade fixed it, earlier.

IMAP support broken in iOS 7?
