Ive had the same problem with my iphone I went to the apple.store they did not even bother to look at it and told.me they can not fix it and I would have had to pay 209 pounds for a new.phone I have had this phone for 2months and the response I recieved from apple was pure rudeness and they gave me no support what so ever, any way that you can try to fix this problem yourself?

SOLVED the "unclean shutdown ... spans" boot-up problem.

I got a hint from domjmarkham's post.

In his case, he said he fully drained the battery. Well, I did that too, but I think it was a matter of waiting a long time and putting my iphone 4S on a heater vent (naked, without the case) for 8 hrs so warm air could blow over it and it could "dry out".

I say dry-out because the 'unclean shutdown' problem started after my iphone was exposed to a very steamy and moist environment (took a long hot shower). Water never touched it, but I think moisture got inside and affected it.

Before putting it on the heater vent, i tried everything: Recovery mode, DFU mode, itunes this, itunes that, Command-Click 'Restore', and nothing would clear the 'unclean shutdown' error.

I let it sit overnight and drained the battery, then did the warm air treatment for 8 hrs, then recharged, then held down the power and home button until it rebooted, and then I got the ios7 "Hello" welcome screen.

I should add that when I did try Recovery mode, early on, i was able to get itunes on my macbook to initiate (but not complete) the reset to factory default. So, after my iphone "dried-out", it was able to complete the reset to factory default. And then I did a restore from a previous backup.

I had this exact same problem, but im pretty sure i found a solution, i was repair my power button flex cable and ripped it, when the new one came in i had put the little GOLD grounding pin for the camera in wrong, i reopened my i phone and changed it to the right place, IPHONE repair miami beach did a great video on how to remove the flex cable and you can see where the little gold peice is when they remove the rear camera, i would check that and double check and make sure you put all the screws back in the right spot. Opening your phone does void your warrenty so if you havent opened your phone i would HIGHLY recommend to check with apple first to see if you are still under warrenty or at least take it into an apple store, here is the video as well as there site is in the description where you can get replacement parts. i hope this works for you all like it has for me. GOOD LUCK!

So I have an Iphone 4s and this problem seems to occure more often when the phone battery dies when my kids or I are in the middle of playing games. Usually, I'll just charge the phone. The error will come up and I'll let it sit and after and hour or so it will reboot its self. Or I'll have to shut it down several time by holding down the power and front screen buttons at the same time for over ten seconds until it reboots properly. This time however nothing seemed to work. I even went as far as letting the battery drain to nothing. The only thing that did work this time was removing the sim card and starting it up. It came up in seconds without an error message. Go figure. I was going to restore the phone through my computer as a last ditch effort but I really didnt want to lose any pictures I had not backed up to the cloud.

Hope this helps b/c I know how frustrating it is....

Best of luck.

I am experiencing the same thing. It has been going on for 6 days now. I can get itunes to recognize it when I put it in DFU mode by holding down power and home buttons but then it wants me to restore from backup. I see other people have said this does not work but I refuse to restore from backup because I just got back from an amazing cruise and Miami and have 200-300 pictures I refuse to lose. If my phone IS a goner (I don't have insurance) is there atleast a way to get pictures off of the phone? I know with my old Dell laptop in college I spilled wine on it and it wouldn't turn on and I had a paper due and the Geek Squad at best buy was able to copy everything from my harddrive onto disks for me. Is there anyway to do this with an iphone 5? If anyone has figured out a solution to this error message please let me know. My error message is identical to the original post except it says "...unclean shutdown; adopted 881 spans." Just a dif number of "spans" whatever that means. I'm not giving up hope quite yet!

Appreciate your help and hope someone can get to the bottom of this or provide some insight on getting my pics atleast.

Same problem I did all the steps for trouble shooting. I even restored as new iPhone like the apple tech said which worked but for about a week only the crashed again. This time it's worst because I can't even restore or update it. My phone is bricked the worst part all this happened after I updated my phone to the new iOS 7 and to make it even worst apple won't replace my phone cuz I was a few days passed my warranty.

I also had the red screen with the overheating but that stopped happening after I restored it and updated it as a new iPhone put all the other problems persist.
