I just had this happen to me too! So scary, but I found the fix on a forum.

Just go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > iCloud account and make sure the button for contacts is green!

Apparently this is happening to quite a few people and multiple times. So just keep checking the settings if it happens again. I guess for some reason iCloud keeps unsyncing the contacts :/

Hope this helps!

I have the same problem happening everyday now. If I go to the apple store I have to pay? Cause to be honest it is not a problem caused by me. It is a iOS problem. I also have a problem with my battery: sometimes my iphone turns off with no reason at 80% or 19% of battery doesn't matter. and comes back on after 5 minutes.

I don't want to pay Apple to fix an issue made by their iOS.

It never happened to me again after I found the apps were causing that 3 months ago!

It's a third party app issue.

The only thing I can suggest you to do is to restore your iPhone as a new device, import all your iCloud data, your music and generic stuff and then to pay attention and install only some groups of Apps at the same time, starting obviously with the ones you really need. You will end up finding what's causing the issue.

It would be a nice idea also to compile a list of them.

These are the ones I found to cause the issue on my iPhone:

  • Procam
  • Infinity Blade II

Tîgêr, upgrading phone won't solve the issue, I remember someone earlier got the same problem with a 5s too, is actually an app messing up your contacts, try to remember an app you have installed lately. Turning off iCloud sync and turning back on will make your contacts return, or something similar, don't remember anymore what was the solution, if what I told you doesn't work, keep reading the posts, someone gave the solution.

"Anyways the solution that worked for me was going to Mail, Contacts, Calendar settings. Then selected iCloud. From there you turn on and off the contacts app. It'll ask you (when you turn It off) if you wana delete the contacts from your phone you obviously wana say no keep contacts. And for some reason my contacts came back! I haven't tried turning it back on but I got my contacts back! Yay!"

One again I've lost all my contacts and now its been 3 days its cost me work and money as I'm self empolyed and not being able to access my contacts is possible worse than lossing the phone - I've tried every thing now to recover them and now am starting to believe there gone for good - Guess I will be spending the day looking at old sim card data to try and recover my contacts from them - once I've done that I will be putting the piece of Rubbish know as iphone in the bin - as a phone that looses Contact information is as good as a ashtray on a motorbike.

As I stated 1,5 months ago I've never had this problem again after finding which third party Apps were causing the issue. It's now nearly 5 months without problems.

I run a business too, so contacts are the most important thing, nut I never complained about my iphone, always being rock solid in every aspect.

We cannot complain Apple for third party App causing security issue in the sandboxing process, the Store is sooo big now and I think it's nearly impossible to check every single App in there for that particular problem.

Try another brand and you will end up finding more issues than benefits, in every aspect; we must think that we are using small computer, not cell phones and so we are responsible on what we are installing on them or, to be more specific, we must complain to the developer himself.

That said, try to format your iphone and install everything from scratch again, paying particular attention installing small groups at Apps per time, starting, of course, from the ones you really need.

Best regards

This happened to me yesterday.. i'm using whatsapp on my 4s with latest iOS7.1. Suddenly my whatsapp showed a notice that i don't have any contact in my phone, so i quit it and checked my iPhone contact, all gone! I restart my 4s and the problem still there. Then I use my MBP login my iCloud account thanks God all contactsstill there. I go Setting -> iCloud turn off the contacts then turn it on again. Found that need to repeat these step couple of times cos the iCloud contacts setting automatic turn if off. To make sure of it, after switch on the iCloud contacts, quit setting and enter again to check it, until you see the iCloud contacts with green color. Then, restart your iPhone and wait until your contacts finish sync. I don't know when will this happen again but so far still ok for me. I think this is a iOS bug..
