staticy lines in dvd playing

Hello recently I tried playing dvds in my brand new macbook both with the mac dvd player and in vlc with default settings but for some reason I seem to be having a problem with playback. The video displays very small staticy faint lines in the video that are somewhat staticy. Is there any setings that may fix this or could it be a driver issue. Anyone else experiencing similar issues? btw my macbook has a superdrive so i dunno if that could have something to do with it. Thanks 🙂

20.ghz Black Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.6), superdrive, 512mb ram, 80gb hd

Which and what kind of dvd you are playing on your MAcBook ?

Some lowcost dvd movie use "letterbox" effect to make their movie look like widescreen movie but if their setting and editing not correct, it will leave occasionally "static line" between the movie and the black edge at the upper and or bottom screen.

Also some downloaded movie sometimes having that "static" lines also.

Try to play your dvd on regular dvd player that hook up to regular TV and compare the picture with MacBook picture played.

Good Luck.

yea I have tried in all 6 retail dvds both widescreen and traditional letterbox format and they all do it. few of them off hand are the matrix, pulp fiction, demolition man, south park uncut. The lines arent actuauly around the screen borders they show up through the entire image and it looks sort of like the image is ripping apart to into a bunch of different pieces. Unfortionently I'm in the process of calibrating the battery atm(its gona be off for 5 hours). So cant realy try anything atm but hopefully I can take

This seems weird but I seem to have fixed whatever the issue was by reinstalling os X on a sugestion of a fellow mac user. I guess mayby something got hosed during updates when i first got the system and imediately downloaded them all.

everything seems to work now except for the matrix if I play it in the mac dvd player app then it just skips slowly through a few frames at a second but if I use vlc to play the same dvd it plays it smoothly without issues.

"The video displays very small staticy faint lines in the video that are somewhat staticy."

Are you sure you're not referring to "interlaced" video? If so, you can use VLC and check the "deinterlace" option to see if that fixes it.

Grab several DVD's and see if they all do that. High quality DVD should not, but lots of DVD's are interlaced, especially if they're TV shows.

If not, I've heard on this forum that insufficient ram (512MB) can cause video glitches. But I've never heard of it effecting DVD playback.
