iOS 7 Music App sorting issues

Hello there,

I'm starting this discussion to express my displeasure with some changes in the Music app that have removed some key functionalities that I had come to rely upon.

First of all, there are some artists in my library with many albums. In iOS 6, accessing those artist's albums was easy. You would click on the artist tab, go to the artist and it would show a list of the albums. Then, you could choose an album and go right to those songs. In iOS 7, this has completely changed. Now, there's no longer an albums view under artists. You have to scroll song by song to get to the newer releases.

For instance, I'm a huge fan of Pearl Jam and have 60 albums of theirs (9 studio, the rest all live records). Now, to get to the latest, I have to spend 30 seconds scrolling all the way down the list. That's not efficient at all. The way it was before — you get a list of albums once you click on the artist, then click on an album to get the songs — should never have been changed.

Second, I consider myself a power user and sort all my albums using the "sort album" tag in iTunes. Previously, that carried over both over syncing and iTunes Match. Now, it ignores it completely. Even my old, trusty iPod Classic still pays attention to this!

I understand that most people don't set their sort order, but for those of us who do — and have spent tons of time doing it — why is this no longer the case?

I spoke with a senior technician yesterday and let him know of these issues. He documented them and is sending them directly to a programming engineer at Apple. I have his name, phone number and contact info and intend to follow up.

He agreed that iOS 7 should be adding functionality — not taking it away! The other thing the senior technician said to me is that the more people call and complain about something, the greater the chance that it will be rectified.

I did so in a very calm, respectful manner and he was very receptive to my concerns. SO, is anyone else frustrated about this? IF so, please post here!

Also, my suggestion to anyone else who feels disappointed in this removed functionality is to call in to Apple Care support and express your concerns in much the same way i did.

That way, if we make our collective voices heard, they'll reintroduce the functionalities we had in the first place.

I have just filled in another feedback form for Apple regarding this.

iTunes on the Mac is still OK and it should be as good on the iPad. It has all that screen real estate with the retina display yet all we have for sorting through music on it is poxy lists! And some of those are not in the correct order!*

Apple is famous for popularising the graphical user interface, yet with this version of the Music player/app in iOS7 it looks as if someone forgot about the front end this time around.

Still haven't played music using the app. Its too awful.

*I don't want to have to RESET ALL to get music that was in the correct order in the corect order now.

Its making me think its time to look elsewhere for my music player (and therefore phone).

I find it hard to belive that a multibillion$ company has done this in error, they had their reasons (nudging users towards playlistsI guess). In which case to me it means they have simply decided not to cater to music fans, but to put their own interests first.

Meanwhile I am using the alternative free apps. Apple need to look over their shoulder there is no room for them to take backwards steps like this , their competition is hotting up.

PFox78, I couldn't agree more with every concern you and the others have had about the new music player and it's poor functionality. I purchased the Iphone because I intended to use it as an Ipod. Ironically Pearl Jam is the artist I struggle with most as I have 48 albums that I regularly peruse and now have to sift through in order to find the one I want at that moment. Another feature they removed is turning the player on while your phone is locked. If you close the player and lock the phone you can no longer do that. It will work if the music player wasn't closed and the phone is locked. I have had to unlock my phone, open the player and select an album while driving many times. The previous OS allowed me to double tap the home button and hit play. Again it only works if you don't close the music player app. I formally stated my concerns today with apple and appreciate how you politely and articulately voiced yours. Hopefully Apple will "hear the sirens"

I agree with all of this. Apple reinvented the wheel. Unfortunately now... iOS 7 Music app has octogon wheels. Why? You had such a nice user interface. Please add back in the album selection window Please get rid of the large album artwork while in any list view. It looks rediculous for people that do not download full albums. I have about 7,500 songs in my library and many of them are singles.

I have to agree too. The only good thing about the music app now is the radio (limited but still ok).

Does anyone know if there is any way possible to turn off the cover flow when you turn your iTouch (or I assume iPhone) on its side? I want to watch videos through my playlists because that way they play back to back without me having to tell it to do so. Going through the videos part just plays them one at a time, which doesn't make any sense either. But the videos are all in this little box instead of the full screen because of that silly cover flow. I'm sure that thing is great if you have like 10 albums but some of us have quite a few more than that and it's just annoying and difficult to navigate.

I will email Apple as well and express just how annoying this has become. I can't believe no one on their software team thought 'this won't work'. I guess they don't listen to much music!

LOL. That'll sit real well with everyone bothered by the Music app changes, people who specifically care about albums and presumably things that define them like release date. I would never do this, because it would mess things up in iTunes as well, and sorting by release year is the least of the Music app problems anyway. The bigger problem is that there is no way to collapse the hybrid album/songs view into just albums, and what you're suggesting doesn't help with the endless scrolling you have to do to navigate it. It also doesn't help with the Music app no longer respecting album boundaries after entering an album from Artists.

This actually reminds me of another deficiency, the inability to correctly order albums that were released the same year unless they happen to be in alphabetical order as well. You can play games with sort fields, but it tends to cause problems in other views.
