iOS 7 Music App sorting issues

Hello there,

I'm starting this discussion to express my displeasure with some changes in the Music app that have removed some key functionalities that I had come to rely upon.

First of all, there are some artists in my library with many albums. In iOS 6, accessing those artist's albums was easy. You would click on the artist tab, go to the artist and it would show a list of the albums. Then, you could choose an album and go right to those songs. In iOS 7, this has completely changed. Now, there's no longer an albums view under artists. You have to scroll song by song to get to the newer releases.

For instance, I'm a huge fan of Pearl Jam and have 60 albums of theirs (9 studio, the rest all live records). Now, to get to the latest, I have to spend 30 seconds scrolling all the way down the list. That's not efficient at all. The way it was before — you get a list of albums once you click on the artist, then click on an album to get the songs — should never have been changed.

Second, I consider myself a power user and sort all my albums using the "sort album" tag in iTunes. Previously, that carried over both over syncing and iTunes Match. Now, it ignores it completely. Even my old, trusty iPod Classic still pays attention to this!

I understand that most people don't set their sort order, but for those of us who do — and have spent tons of time doing it — why is this no longer the case?

I spoke with a senior technician yesterday and let him know of these issues. He documented them and is sending them directly to a programming engineer at Apple. I have his name, phone number and contact info and intend to follow up.

He agreed that iOS 7 should be adding functionality — not taking it away! The other thing the senior technician said to me is that the more people call and complain about something, the greater the chance that it will be rectified.

I did so in a very calm, respectful manner and he was very receptive to my concerns. SO, is anyone else frustrated about this? IF so, please post here!

Also, my suggestion to anyone else who feels disappointed in this removed functionality is to call in to Apple Care support and express your concerns in much the same way i did.

That way, if we make our collective voices heard, they'll reintroduce the functionalities we had in the first place.

What, back to iOS6?

No, I wasn't saying going back to iOS 6 (you can't anyway). I'm saying that your prior iOS 7 installation was likely corrupted, whether that was 7.0 thru 7.0.2. Just the act of installing 7.0.3 is what fixed your track order problem, which likely would have also been fixed by restoring to whatever variant of iOS 7 you had prior to 7.0.3.

In other words, this was not fixed by 7.0.3, it was fixed simply by re-installing an iOS package, which is what restoring would have done too. Track sorting isn't the subject of this thread (album sorting within the Artist menu is). Track sorting has been fine on all my iOS 7 installations.

After this morning, I think I'm done with this phone as a music player, which was pretty much the only reason I wanted an iPhone in the first place. I just can't stand it anymore. It starts my day off in a bad way, continues throughout the day at work and doesn't stop until I get home and put the thing on the charger for the evening.

The interface, the music sorting, landscape mode, the constant interruption of I Heart Radio to play the first song alphabetically in my collection, forgetting what song it was playing right before plugging it into my car and playing the first song alphabetically in my collection instead... ARRRGH!!!! After a month of dealing this crap, I never want to use it again. It's infuriating and mind-boggling that Apple could release something so awful. I have submitted feedback on these problems every week since iOS 7 was released. I'm done with it.

Hi Charles,

thank you for Picky, it. really makes life with iOS7 begrabe.

There is just one small issue I'd like to adress: if you use the shuffle play mode, without selecting/filtering any Album or Artist, Picky apparently plays Songs that are no longer on the phone. I add/remove music from time to time on my 4s(16GB) and Picky plays songs I removed months ago and which it does actually not show in the song list. Not a big issue, but you may want to take a look.

I wonder if there is an alternative app (to Music) that can show full titles for songs and albums. I've complained about this before: in classical music, many tracks have very long titles so they don't fit on the screen, but start exactly the same. Just an example:

String Quartet No. 14 in D minor ("Death and the Maiden"), D. 810 - Allegro

String Quartet No. 14 in D minor ("Death and the Maiden"), D. 810 - Andante con moto

Now that the option of seeing a full title (by holding a track) has been removed, using the official Apple Music app is just a nightmare.

I wonder if there is another app out there that can conveniently show long titles, supports Airplay and etc.

Hi Zornie,

I too have a lot of classical music and have tried this for you to confirm.

It does not work in the native app in IOS 7.0.3, same goes for Lagu. I also use the Picky app and that does not have the feature either. Seems like the only way to see it is to actually play the track and wait, which isn't very helpful.

Good thing is the developer of Picky, Charles is on this forum quite a bit and listens to the feedback people give. He might be able to confirm if this is still possible in the new IOS.

BTW, new update is great Charles.

What I think is dumb with the music app and I'm not sure if it's been like this all along or if it's just the way is in iOS 7 but I have an album that has a lot of different artists music it's a compilation sort of so I go into Album view and I wish to play the entire album I can't because there's like 38 entries for that one album and then if I were to search for it then it comes back with unknown album how Retardrd is that?
