iOS 7 Music App sorting issues

Hello there,

I'm starting this discussion to express my displeasure with some changes in the Music app that have removed some key functionalities that I had come to rely upon.

First of all, there are some artists in my library with many albums. In iOS 6, accessing those artist's albums was easy. You would click on the artist tab, go to the artist and it would show a list of the albums. Then, you could choose an album and go right to those songs. In iOS 7, this has completely changed. Now, there's no longer an albums view under artists. You have to scroll song by song to get to the newer releases.

For instance, I'm a huge fan of Pearl Jam and have 60 albums of theirs (9 studio, the rest all live records). Now, to get to the latest, I have to spend 30 seconds scrolling all the way down the list. That's not efficient at all. The way it was before — you get a list of albums once you click on the artist, then click on an album to get the songs — should never have been changed.

Second, I consider myself a power user and sort all my albums using the "sort album" tag in iTunes. Previously, that carried over both over syncing and iTunes Match. Now, it ignores it completely. Even my old, trusty iPod Classic still pays attention to this!

I understand that most people don't set their sort order, but for those of us who do — and have spent tons of time doing it — why is this no longer the case?

I spoke with a senior technician yesterday and let him know of these issues. He documented them and is sending them directly to a programming engineer at Apple. I have his name, phone number and contact info and intend to follow up.

He agreed that iOS 7 should be adding functionality — not taking it away! The other thing the senior technician said to me is that the more people call and complain about something, the greater the chance that it will be rectified.

I did so in a very calm, respectful manner and he was very receptive to my concerns. SO, is anyone else frustrated about this? IF so, please post here!

Also, my suggestion to anyone else who feels disappointed in this removed functionality is to call in to Apple Care support and express your concerns in much the same way i did.

That way, if we make our collective voices heard, they'll reintroduce the functionalities we had in the first place.

I have scheduled a call with a technician for this afternoon, and will discuss my concerns as well. Let's hope that if enough people raise the issue, it will be addressed. I will post a follow up once I've spoken with Apple.

Another little annoyance, if the song has lyrics in the tag you can't change the rating. Tapping the artwork brings up the lyrics (great!) but this is the same thing you need to do to rate the song. There should be a cyclical function when you tap artwork: Now Playing --> Rating --> Lyrics (if loaded). What's worse is that if any song on the album has lyrics, then you can't rate any of the songs. Grrr.... more feedback to submit.

Want to add my voice of disappointment regarding the updated Music app. Only a couple of weeks ago I used to love playing music on this iPad... now albums are all over the place, listed several times, tracks not in order, am missing the grid album view....

I am sure, however, that Apple will sort it out OR offer decent documentation!!

I'm now going to give them some feedback.

I couldn't agree with you more, notjustdad. In addition to my complaints earlier, I started looking through my iPad and the music is also a mess there. Some of the albums in iTunes Match don't even have the songs in order! It's outrageous.

The sad thing here is that iOS 7 is quite nice in many ways, but this music app debacle has just absolutely ruined the experience for me. Anytime I see someone running iOS 6 I go up to them and tell them not to update. I show them what happened to my music and everyone reacts in disbelief.

I cannot believe that a company whose modern foundation was built on the digital music would actually allow all this to happen.

So glad that I'm not the only one with this frustration. Most people that I know with an iPhone don't even have music on it, so they had no idea what I was talking about. It boggles my mind how someone who owns an iPhone does not have music on it.

I'm right on with everyone on this annoyance. I'm a little different though as I don't often listen to individual albums. I like to have an alphabetical list of all the songs from an artist and I just scroll through and play the ones I like. Often times I can't fully remember the name of a song, I just know it starts with a certain letter and can recognize it when I see it. This wasn't a problem before because I would go to the Artist, click "All Songs", go to that letter, and see it right away. Now I have to search through every album in that artist tab just to find the song, which is a pain in the rear, especially when I often times have 10+ albums from my favorite artists. I too am about to delete every album out of my songs descriptions, just so I can get an alphabatized all song list, but then that screws me over in the rare instance that I want to listen to a specific album. Then with my crappy memory, if I don't remember the name of the album I want to shuffle, I have to first go to the artists tab, find the artist, get the ablum name and then go to the albums tab, find the album, and finally be able to shuffle it that way.

I also cannot stand how they have a giant album picture next to the artists name. It's so much harder to scroll quick and find the artist I'm looking for because there's only room for 4 artists names on screen at a time (maybe 5 if you have an iphone 5/c/s). I wouldn't mind it as much if they had a small album picture like how it is under the songs tab, but this is just rediculously unnecessary. I know I could use siri to locate what I'm looking for, but 3/4 the time she can't understand what I'm saying due to background noise or just not recognizing cleanly spoken, accent free, english.

I'm sending feedback on the issue.

I've already submitted feedback but still, I completely agree. The new sorting system is awful. What used to take seconds now takes entirely too long. I am enjoying pretty much everything else about the new OS but this new music player is horrible.

I do not need pictures of artists or random album covers bloating the size of my Artist list to twice the length it used to be. An option to turn these pictures off would be much appreciated.

Artist / Album / Song sorting was so much easier than Artist / 400+ songs. Words cannot express how hard this new way fails.

The alphabetical sorting of albums with tiny pictures in columns 2 - 4 blocks high in landscape mode is completely ridiculous when you have hundreds of albums. Coverflow was much better and having player controls back on the main screen where they used to be would be nice too.

Seems like every day that I use iOS 7, I find another change to the music player that I do not like.

Now, every single time my iPhone detects an event on its cable, (plug into or unplug from stereo, start truck or turn key from IGN to ACC) it interrupts the current app or song that I specifically chose to hear and starts playing a random song that I don't want to hear. I don't get it. Why would the music app override I Heart Radio or Podcasts to play random music from my library simply because I plugged a charging cable into it or started my truck? It's an Apple cable plugged directly into my stereo's USB port. It didn't do this before the update and there's no way to make it stop now.

I'm a firm believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." This is one app that didn't need fixing and now it's broken.

Agreed with all comments that I have read. It was a shock when I went to look up one of my favorite artists and all the albums were not in alphabetical order. I coudn't understand what "new" order they were placed in. I tried to adjust Itunes settings to no avail and then I found this posting on the Support Forum indicating that they were now in year of release order on my iphone. The funny thing is that I can still sort the albums alphabetically in Itunes (first by artist and then album title). If you can do that, it should sync up the exact way based on the parameters you have indicated in Itunes. IOS7 Music is a hot mess!

There may be an obvious answer to my simple question, but where has the search box gone that was within the music app? I really don't want to go to the home screen and use spotlight every time i need to quickly search for one song. As a dance teacher using my ipad, I want to quickly search within the app, like I used to. Any help much appreciated!

I have to agree with you. I turned my phone in landscape and instead of being able to scroll to each cover, I had to look at a montage of covers jammed together. This is the one thing I do not like. Don't know if Apple will change this. If not, I'll have to live with it. We'll there are worse things to deal with, right?

Sep 25, 2013 6:36 AM in response to Ripl3y

Ripl3y, the search is still at the top of each page - artists, songs, playlists, albums etc. To get to it, either scroll up to th top (above the first listed item under 'A') or use the shortcut, which is to tap the very top bar if the screen (i.e: tap the clock - this works to take you to the top of a page in many apps like safari, notes, Facebook, Instagram etc...)

Thanks! Not nearly as convenient -- especially since you can't press twice in quick succession, but have to wait for the display to come up before the second press -- but at least I can see the time now.

And what's up with not being able to delete an entire album at once any more?

Has anyone found any third party apps that work as smoothly and intuitively as the iOS 6 Music app?
