iPhone 5 with iOS 7 randomly shuts off

Are any of you aware of iOS 7 randomly shutting down iPhones? Ever since I upgraded 2 day ago it has shut down at least 3 times. The battery was at about 18%, 20%, and 36% when it shut down. I don't believe it’s a bug with the battery percentage because it started back up as soon as hit the power button. Also, it is not due to overheating or anything else wrong with the environment. Nothing in the environment has changed except that I updated to iOS 7. Let me know if this occurs to anyone else and if there are any solutions pending?

i'm having this problem as well.. It will shut off usually at 20% sometimes at 35% or even 55%.. This problem only started after IOS7 was installed ... After the second update its started to happen a lot more. There is no way its a battery issue, i've owned a few i phones and the batteries shd last much longer then a little over year... Apple needs to address this issue, this isn't right, people are waking up late for work because of this!

Allow me to add one more frustrated voice to this discussion.

I have iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.4

I have only been experiencing this problem since installing iOS 7 and really after the first or second bug fix update to iOS 7.

iPhone has shut down at random battery % below 20% and even 30% or more, but at 30% or more it restarts itself or I can turn it back on.

After reading some of the messages on this thread, I found I can turn it back on even under 10% by pressing the power and home buttons simultaneously for about 10 seconds, but it keeps turning off again before I can do anything.

I was thinking battery problem, but after seeing this thread, I'm going to call tech support and lodge my complaint that way also.

Well folks it's the battery! Did a clean install no new apps and it failed.

Do this. Call Apple and ask them to send you a text to do a diagnostic check on the battery. You receive a txt with a link and then you select quick test and done, battery failed! Phone is 14 months old and out of warranty.

I was pretty upset and they're going to replace my phone since I have not had any issues with devices before.

Way to go Apple!

Hi,

I suffered the same problems with my 4s since upgrading to ios 7. Jerky battery meter and shut off with 10-20% battery left.I tried the usual suggested solutions, ie. full charge cycle and a reset to factory settings, but with no effect.

All the time I was convinced that this has to be a software problem, because my iphone battery was perfectly well before the upgrade. So I thought that maybe something went wrong during the update process. I made the upgrade to ios 7 and the subsequent updates all via OTA. And my understanding is, that this method is an incremental update, meaning that only the changed parts are replaced. So for me it looked like I was running a system comprised of old and new parts and that this could be the cause of my problems.

Well, since I was already on version 7.0.4 iTunes didn't offer me the possibility to reinstall ios. So I downloaded the iphone 4s-ipsw file for 7.0.4 and installed it via iTunes and the ALT-click method (google it). In my understanding this performs a complete install of the ios software.

Okay, my thinking behind this may be complete bogus, but... IT SOLVED THE PROBLEM! The jerkyness vanished and after 2-3 complete charge cycles the phone now runs down to 1% before shutting off (like it does with ios 6).

Perhaps I was just lucky but it is worth a try.

I was having similar early shutdown problems with my ~14 month old iPhone 5 running iOS 7. I did not want to go through a full restore, too much pain, so I went ahead and bought a replacement battery. Installed it myself, took all of about 30 minutes with the right tools, and now I can happily report that the shutdown problems are completely resolved.

When I first got the phone, I was impressed that it could get more than 1 day of regular usage without charging. Before my battery swap, I was getting 6-8 hours before needing to charge. Now it's back to 24 hours or more, and no unexpected shutdowns.

I did not do a software restore or reset or itunes OS update of any sort, just the battery swap.

I believe that the full software restore will help a lot of people, because it will lighten the load on the battery and the result will be an improvement, but I still think most of you also have an underlying battery issue. Spring for the $30 battery/tool combo and fix it or pay someone to do it for you.

I'd just like to say that ahs70's post on Dec 1, 2013 at 1:17am on Pg. 9 worked for me as well.

If your iPhone's battery is acting up you need to determine if it's a software issue or a hardware/battery issue. To do that, after syncing your iPhone, erase/hard reset all data and settings from your iPhone to what it was from the factory as new. This can be found in Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content ansd Settings. Then test it out for a day or two. If it's still acting up then it's likely a hardware issue and you will need to get your battery replaced. If your warranty is done than check out this link to get a battery kit to replace your iPhone battery yourself: http://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5-Replacement-Battery/IF118-001#produc tDescription

If your IPhone is now working properly after hard resetting it than it's most likely a software issue. This battery issue only started after upgrading to the new iOs7, so it is obviously related to the update not properly installing itself. What has worked for me and many others is to manually update to iOS 7.0.4 using the full downloaded version of the update which is about 1.32 Gigs.

But first you need to find out what model of iPhone you have, click here to determine if it's GSM or CDMA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Then go here and scroll down to download the iOS 7.0.4 complete update for your device: http://www.downloadios7.org/download-ios-7-0-4-ipsw-file.html

Then scroll up on the download page and follow the instructions of updating your iPhone manually following the instructions below: "IPSW with iTunes"

And your done.

Problem solved.

I only posted this because it was a very frustrating problem that noone really seemed to figure out a solution for.

I hope this helps.

As a follow-up to my previous post I can confirm that the battery problems are completely gone. It's over a week now since I reinstalled the ios and I went two 5-6 complete charge cycles since.

In response to Slick Pouch I'd like to add that I also perfomed a reset to factory settings prior to that, but the battery problems stayed. If the problems are really caused by a botched ios update I'd think that they survive the factory reset because that resets/deletes your data only and doesn't reset the ios itself.

BTW: The reinstalling of the ios alone via the described method won't delete your data. So it is a rather painless operation.
