Well Apple has ruined my night. The update failed and I've tried to restore it via iTunes but even when it is plugged in, iTunes doesn't recognise it. Anyone have any answers on how to restore this?
I cannot see this option
Choose iTunes > Preferences (Mac) or Edit > Preferences (Windows), click Apple TV, and make sure "Look for Apple TVs" is selected.
On the bonus side I plugged the Apple TV into a Windows PC and iTunes found it straight away. Bit confused by this but very happy that it is restored.

Just for the record, on the PC hit CTRL+B and you will get the Meu Bar then you will see Edit > Preferences
You're not alone marlit! I have the exact same problem. I started updating to OS 6.0 and when the ATV turned off it started blinking furiously. Can't seem to connect it to iTunes on my Mac at all. Going to try it on my PC now... will feed back..
Mine is gone too for the moment. It's night here in Germany, I don't have a Micro USB cable, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow.
Oh I can see that on the Mac and PC. Its the click on Apple TV bit I can't find.
This is a screenshot of my Settings menu. That's what it should look like. (I still have an old 1st Gen. AppleTV next to my 2nd Gen. - maybe that's why it still features that old icon.)

You have to be in iTunes not in system preferences
This is settings within iTunes. Just in German.
In the iTunes preferences, there is no apple tv logo, so there is no option to deal with it in the preferences. It doesn't show up as a device, even after 5 minutes of being attached by micro USB, following all the instructions from all of the links above.
It's just blinking fanatically...
Try restarting it via remote control.
Hold Menu and Down until it starts blinking again...

No, not on windows either.... How di you get to the point where it was going to do another update?
I tried holding down 'down' and 'menu' together to force a reset, both plugged into the tv and plugged into my mac and neither of those solutions seem to have worked.
I had to do a factory reset but it would only work on the Windows PC. If it's not showing on either the Mac or PC then I would ensure you have iTunes 11.1 installed
