ios7 home sharing issue ( Video App)

After updated to iOS 7 and itunes 11.1, there are several issue I encounter with home sharing that I would like to share.

My problem is only in the video app. Music app works, no problem

My House have 3 media libraries (music + movie + TV), my wife, my daughter and myself. All three libraries work flawlessly with our 2 mac mini, 3 macbook, 1 imac, 3 ipad, 2 iphone, 2 apple tv and 1 ipod. After itunes 11.1 updated, home sharing doesn't seem to work. No problem, if anyone have problem with home sharing, simply do the following

1. turn off home sharing in itunes

2. turn off library sharing under itunes preferences

3. deauthorize your computer under "store" tab.

4. quite itunes

5. restart itunes

6. authorize your computer

7. turn on library sharing

8. turn on home sharing

After all these tinkering on the computer. ALL my apple tv and my 1st generation ipad (iOS 5.1.1) work perfectly. remote app works (ALL iOS), video app works (iOS 5.1.1). All my iOS 7 devices work..................... kinda,

After another hour of tikering, here is what I learn. Only 2 out of 3 libraries show up on video app (iOS 7). Libraries show up randomly without any order. If I shout down the app and reopen, I might get different libraries. No matter what, video app only display 2 libraries.

There is a "show all videos" option under setting -> videos which able you to watch videos purchased from itunes store. If I disable it, I only get 1 library show up on my shared. Rarely, I got 2 libraries show up in the video app, but mostly just 1 library.

From my point of view, there are definitely bugs crawling everywhere under the app. If anyone encounter the same problem, or anyone resolve this situation, please share your knowledge.

Just one conclusion, the app LOOKS GREAT! Execution............. not so great.

BTW Good luck on deleting videos from the app. The video app will quite unexpectly everytime you delete a video.

At least you got an iPhone Video app when you upgraded. I've only got an iPhone 4 - not even a 4s. After the IOS 7 upgrade I no longer have any application that can play video on my iPhone. Yet when I look in my iTunes Library on my iMac, I can see that the movies are still synching to my iPhone.

I went to the Apple store today, and asked to get my mail working again. The Genius Bar there has told me there is no way to synch the mail account information from my iMac to the iPhone, so I can't get email either.

When I got home, I plugged the iPhone into my iMac's USB port and iTunes says . . .

Synced with "Genius Bar Floater Three" - erase this iPhone?

I did not want this to happen so I pressed cancel. Now the iPhone is a BRICK

I have made 3 visits to the Genius Bar in the Apple Store and now I have a failed iPhone.

Where can we go to get help? How can I complain to Apple about this? How can I get my iPhone working by somebody that knows how to do it? I have iPhone backups in iCloud, and on my iMac - and I'm guessing on my Time Capsule . . . Why can't I restore my iPhone? What good are the backups, if the iPhone is now a "Genius Bar Floater Three" iPhone instead of my iPhone?

IOS 7 is turning out to be a shockingly bad operating system for iPhone 4 hardware

I have good news. I had a marathon phone session (over 90 minutes) with Denielle, one of Apple's support staff in the United States. I'm in Canberra, Australia. We managed to get most things fixed. Denielle was simply fabulous in helping me get through this . . . multiple re-boots meant we lost communications, sometimes for as long as 3 ~ 4 minutes before the iPhone was operational again.

The response time - eg: swiping to log on and pushing buttons (sometimes 10 seconds wait for me) are all much improved . . . to better than just tolerable - however not snappy fast like they used to be. The Facebook App is still pathetically slow though. This appears to be just the Facebook app.

Of interest, I was using about 25 Gbyte of storage on my iPhone. After we got it working again, this dropped to only 15 Gbyte. I don't know what I've lost (if anything), I expect I will discover some things over the next few weeks.

One trick was the "Reset All Settings" option. It's a lot of work to re-enter the information again, and you can only do this at specific locations for example with your Wi-Fi network passwords. There is another drastic trick too that involves backing up everything and then erasing the entire iPhone and starting afresh with getting going and finally restoring from your backup. I won't go into it here because it's too complex, and the opportunity for transcribing the procedure incorrectly is too great.

For what it's worth, I nuked the iPhone 5s back to factory defaults, set up only enough to test Home Sharing and it still wasn't working. I was lucky to see one of four Home Shares, luckier still to connect after countless attempts, impossibly lucky to get a list of titles, and I felt like I won the lottery if I could actually get a video to play. So an all Apple environment won't interoperate. iOS 6 was horribly slow but it worked most of the time.

Relaunched and restarted every piece of s/w or h/w in the chain. Nothing helped.

Meanwhile, Netflix, EyeTV, and Plex streaming all work vastly better than Home Sharing has ever worked. I'm at a loss to understand why Apple isn't embarrassed by this.

I wanted to post a followup to my posting as I have been successful in solving my connectivity issues.

Over this past weekend I was reading some litature on the Apple Extreme about the dual band and I started thinking. Could my devices be accessing my network on different bands and that's my issue. So I manually forced them all to the same band and BANG everything is working. Perfectly. Even all our ATV no long require us to restate them every time. Something so simple...I hope this helps.

I've got a similar problem. I'm running iTunes (latest) on a HP Mediasmart server with whs 2011. This is being shared through 5 Macs, 3 PCs, 3 ATVs, and about 1/2 dozen mobile devices; everything works fine (now, had some real problems a few months back) except the video won't play on the ipads, iPhone, etc all running ios7. The movies and tv shows won't load at all. The shared tabs comes up on the video icon but the circle just keeps spinning. Music plays fine, and the video works everywhere else. How can that be?

I don't have more than one shared library, but as with most I have run into the same issue of only the music sharing working consistently on an ipad 3 running ios 7.0.4. A few tricks I have found that help but have not completely solved inconsistent video home sharing even populating on the ipad. Is if you attempt to load a library, never press "cancel." In my experience, every time I pressed cancel and attempt to restart I always get the error message "Unable to turn on home sharing." If you do press cancel you can get it to reattempt without having to reset the device by either using the 4 finger upward swipe or double tapping the home button to access the running applications and then removing it from the running list by swiping it towards the top of the screen. If you do that and restart videos you can then select the library and it will reattempt to load without the error message.

A few other tricks that helped but have not solved it completely is making sure that:

1: Your Mac os or Windows firewall does not block in the incoming connections

2. Your wifi router is not restricting the use of certain TCP and UDP ports. For a list of this ports visit this page and look under the 5th section.

Even thought home sharing was working flawlessly on my appletv 2nd gen, I opened those ports specifically for my ipad's static ip address and I had success consistenty for about a week or two and then it has become inconsistent again.

Usualy I have to try 2 to 3 times for it to load, but it does eventually load and I have a large library with 500+ movies and many more tv shows.

As for some of the other issues I have not run into them, and I don't have more than one library so I have not experienced the same issua as wilfred. I will leave feedback though about the inconsistent loading because it is rather frustrating.

I just bought an iPad Mini Retna. I was having the same issue. Tried the fixes mentioned in the thread. None of them worked. In my case my computer didn't show up on the iPad at all. Here's what I figured out. I have had an Apple ID for a long time. Therefore my ID was not an email address. When the whole conversion took place I had to create an ID that was an email address. The upshot is that I had the iPad connected to iCloud with the email ID and the computer with the other ID. To fix this I deauthorized my computer and then reautherized it using the ID I used on the iPad.

Hope that helps.
