why do I have to have a tv package with att to use the watch espn app. Isn't that the point of having an apple tv

Apple tv's watch espn app says this channel is not part of my tv package. I do not have a tv package. Isn't that the point? I just want to watch espn, my provider is supported but not my plan. A total ripoff by ATT, ESPN, and Apple.

Your anger should be focused on ESPN and the cable/satellite providers. They and other providers are the ones who demanded that you must have an active subscription with certain cable/satellite companies before you can watch their channels. Apple can't just start delivering ESPN to you free. The cable/satellite companies are fighting tooth and nail to prevent you from bypassing their systems. They see devices like the Apple TV, Google's Chromecast, and the Roku box as direct competition. Apple has apparently been trying to negotiate separate deals with content providers but no luck yet. The day will eventually come when you will be able to subscribe directly to content providers, probably through iTunes. That's already the case with Netflix, Hulu, MLB, etc.
