airplay icon missing in itunes windows solution

I have had trouble with itunes having the airplay icon show up. I use the remote app on ipad and was having trouble with it finding my iTunes library. I could play content on apple tv and stream from ipad to TV but the issue with the remote app not working and the icon simply being gone from itunes was driving me crazy. I tried the switch to mini player and the close the program and then start up and sometimes it would show up but after installing the newest version of itunes on the 18th it was gone. I made sure all the obvious things were right like having home sharing on both itunes and the device i was using, connected to the same wifi and not a guest account, updated router firmware, rebooted router, etc. Wouldnt come back up at all. Tried everything and then found something that worked and now can close out program and bring iTunes back up and works everytime. I am using windows 7. I hope this might help someone who had the same problem I had.

1) open control panel.

2)Choose Network and internet

3)Select the VIEW NETWORK STATUS TASKS under NETWORK and SHARING CENTER section

4) Choose the active network connection. It is usually name " wireless Network Connection 1" or something similiar.

5) Click the properties button

6) If the Internet PROTOCOL VERSION 6(TCP/IPv6) is checked, uncheck it, then click OK.

7) Click CLOSE

8) Restart iTunes and try to use the Home Sharing feature again.

Nice work Toploader! I have had this problem for best part of a year. Could use Apple TV from iPad, iPod and iPhone, but not iTunes on PC and Apple Support couldn't resolve. This worked a treat. Cheers

Dear Toploader,

I suspect there are very many more beneficiaries of your advice than those who reply. I'm one of those beneficiaries -I've had this problem on and off for months and months and months. That it was intermittent made it impossible for me to fix permanently, but your solution seems to have worked, and going on the other thanks posted here I expect it will continue to do so.

Many thanks Toploader -you've made the world a better place, and if we could all do that each day, no matter how large or small the action, what a world it would be!

Toploader, you have just solved a problem I have had for more than a year. I have adjusted dozens of settings in iTunes, Norton and Windows, reinstalled all of the software, and was ready to throw my PC out. Since all of our iOS devices seemed to run AirPlay without any problem, I was literally going to buy an iMac tomorrow--just to run iTunes. Since you saved me at least $1500, how can I get you a $50 iTunes gift card/credit? Seriously. Thanks so much.

DUDE!!! After calling Apple Support twice to no avail, and after many weeks of trying to fix this, your solution worked!! I cannot believe that having TCP/IP version 6 enabled causes iTunes HomeSharing to fail to work! This is insane. So what happens when everyone starts using the new TCP/IP v6 on their networks? (hypothetical question)

Anyway, THANK YOU!!!

I tried the uncheck TCP/IP6 solution provided above but the airplay icon only returned for a while and then wouldn't come back. Also, the apple tv would keep asking me to turn on home sharing when it was already on. The solution I have so far had success with is to disable IPv6 properly as per the microsoft knowledge base at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852

What I did was option b (at step 5) and type "ffffffff" in the box provided at that point.

So far so good!

After the iTunes 11.4.1 update failed due to the error: "The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer," I followed the fix at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5376.

After installation iTunes auto-launched with none of my library files. I closed it, opened iTunes again and received "Windows is now configuring this application." iTunes loaded with all my files, but there was no Airplay icon and none of my home shares showed up.

I repeated the above steps multiple times to no avail.

Disabling IPV6 fixed the problem!

Many thanks!

I had the same problem, IP/v6 is Unchecked in my network setting but

whenever my computer goes to sleep and wakes up airplay stops working, and I needed to restart windows to fix that but now I have a solution.

here is my solution:

1- while iTunes is running go to network setting and CHECK MARK IP/v6 and apply.

2- Close iTunes.

3- revers step 1, meaning go to network setting and Uncheck IP/v6 and apply.

4-Run your iTunes and it should work.
