airplay icon missing in itunes windows solution

I have had trouble with itunes having the airplay icon show up. I use the remote app on ipad and was having trouble with it finding my iTunes library. I could play content on apple tv and stream from ipad to TV but the issue with the remote app not working and the icon simply being gone from itunes was driving me crazy. I tried the switch to mini player and the close the program and then start up and sometimes it would show up but after installing the newest version of itunes on the 18th it was gone. I made sure all the obvious things were right like having home sharing on both itunes and the device i was using, connected to the same wifi and not a guest account, updated router firmware, rebooted router, etc. Wouldnt come back up at all. Tried everything and then found something that worked and now can close out program and bring iTunes back up and works everytime. I am using windows 7. I hope this might help someone who had the same problem I had.

1) open control panel.

2)Choose Network and internet

3)Select the VIEW NETWORK STATUS TASKS under NETWORK and SHARING CENTER section

4) Choose the active network connection. It is usually name " wireless Network Connection 1" or something similiar.

5) Click the properties button

6) If the Internet PROTOCOL VERSION 6(TCP/IPv6) is checked, uncheck it, then click OK.

7) Click CLOSE

8) Restart iTunes and try to use the Home Sharing feature again.

Nice work Toploader! I have had this problem for best part of a year. Could use Apple TV from iPad, iPod and iPhone, but not iTunes on PC and Apple Support couldn't resolve. This worked a treat. Cheers

After upgrading to Windows 10 and iTunes 12.2.2.25 with Apple Music, Airplay icon kept disappearing and Apple Remote on iPad no longer found iTunes library. After disabling iPv6 protocol on ethernet card, everything is back! Let's hope this gets fixed soon!

On Windows 10 Pro, with iTunes 12.3.2.25 - i was having this same issue. Following the recommendation above I disabled IPv6, opened up iTunes and there it was! Closed iTunes, re-enabled IPv6, opened iTunes and it was still there. Weird...

All this worked in Windows 7, but I have tried everything here and in other threads for Windows 10, and the icon would disappear mostly, but even when it was there, it would stop connecting while in use.

I finally just gave up and went back to Windows 7 and now (with ipV6 disabled of course) everything works again.

Once I did this, the icon appeared the next time I opened iTunes. However, I then realized that my internet would not work on my computer (hard-wired to the router). I restarted my computer and it still did not work. Is there a way I can do this with a hard connection to my router? Any ideas on what the problem could be?

After disabling IPv6, I too had complete success after a month of frustration with Itunes and Airplay. A shame that Apple is not more forthcoming with news on the subject. (Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 with Itunes 11.1.3.8)

Does anyone out there know the true implications of operating with IPv6 disabled?

Toploader21120, we are all grateful for your assistance on this. By the way, how did you figure this work around out?

Worked for me too. Closed iTunes, disabled IPv6, opened iTunes and there it was.

You're unlikely to need ipv6 for anything soon.

Most excellent! This worked for me. To confirm, I went back and forth, turning IPv6 off and on, restarting iTunes. IPv6 on, no airplay icon. IPv6 off, airplay icon just fine. Go figure.

This problem baffled me for 3 months! But this fixed it for me. Thanks for posting. Seems like every Apple upgrade becomes kicks off a scavenger hunt for information on how to get your system working again.

Nope, spoke too soon. Still not working properly on Win8.1

Maybe someone from apple and someone from microsoft should have a coffee together and sort this out? I'm starting lose interest in the appletv...

Here's the problems:

1) Windows 8.1 laptop (WiFi) Ipv6 disabled. Restart computer and turn on appletv get airplay icon (blue) in itunes 11.1.4. Try to play music to (stream to) appletv - won't work. Airplay icon turns orange.

2) Try accessing itunes library from appletv (pull). Library can be found, music can be accessed and played until a random amount of time when the appletv says "Turn on home sharing..." even though everything was working perfectly well. Go back to Laptop and turn OFF home sharing then turn back ON home sharing, and, now can pull music again for another random amount of time until it faults again

3) Windows 7 professional laptop itunes with home sharing - cannot access windows8.1 itunes library despite home sharing being on/identical credentials on both machines. Win7 machine can stream to appletv no problems.

Thanks for this.... fixed my frustrations with airplay similar to everyone else's on this thread. Hopefully Apple will take note and act before IPv6 becomes necessary. Fingers crossed that it keeps working until then!

Greets back to Germany! I appreciate your screenshot showing where to shut off the IpV6 since I had looked in another Properties location that showed it "checked off" but your screenshot led me to the place that I needed to check it off. I had already re-enabled Bonjour services, but after a reboot and relaunch of iTunes, "Viola!" the AirPlay icon appeared in iTunes. I just got the Airport Express to route music to my stereo speakers and so this was really helpful. Apple made it really easy to setup up the Airport Express on my iPhone 6 and play music from it, but I had wanted to play music from my iTunes library.

Thanks too all who posted and created enough of an information based to make this work. I really appreciate your help and time.
