Its not a bug. Go to settings, messages. Under message history change from forever to 30 days
Hi Kurty999. You have certainly put a lot of time and effort into this thread. It is greatly appreciated. I used the iBackup Bot approach that both you and Nickc25 advocated. It worked. I got my Messages in storage down to 0. I replied to one of Nickc25's posts with the following:
"I subsequently sent several text messages to myself with some photo attachments - approximately 20 MB's. After I went and deleted all of them in the Message App (ios 8), I went to General - Usage - Manage Storage and found that Messages (Saved) was 12 MB. Only a portion - 60% were removed." I tired the following, but it did not work at all:
1. Select Settings > General > Spotlight Search
2. Un-Check Messages in the Spotlight Search
3. Delete all text messages that show in the Messages app
4. Open the multi-tasking bar by double tapping on the Home button
5. Close ALL running applications
6. Restart your phone
I would appreciate it if you could posit as to why you think my iPhone (5c) is retaining a percentage of these "deleted" messages in storage? I just wondered if you have come across this issue, and if so, do you have a solution? Thanks!
Thank you Lucerova! Kurty999 shared your solution and it worked great for me. I had 2.8 GB of messages. I thought it would take forever to delete each thread individually, but it really only took about 25 minutes. I used your method of turning off spotlight search, deleting messages, closing all apps, then rebooting phone. Now messages only take up 286 MB. Previously I had only 705 MB of free space available, but after following your instructions, I now have 3.2 GB of free space available.
I have an 8 GB phone that has 3.5 GBs of saved messages....10 points for apple -_-
✅ Thanks Kurt ! 🙂
Works with iOS8.3 and OSX Yosemite too!
Hi there, does this work for emails? I have 1 GB tied up with mail storage but have deleted all my emails. Alison
This did not work for iPhone 7. 😟
This worked perfectly well on the first try. Thank you!
