Mail app storage iOS7
Since upgrading to iOS 7 my email is now taking up 700mb of storage space. Before upgrading it used very little space. Is this a bug? How can I regain that space? Thanks

I don't have an answer. With me it ranges from 1.6 GB to over 2 GB. Worse, the only way to delete old now downloaded on to my Iphone is one at a time. The "Mark All" function will not allow you to mark and delete a thousand emails. You actually have to page through and mark them one at a time. Worse still, even after spending many hours doing so, and deleting thousands of emails, and getting down to less than 50, mail still occupies 1.6 GB of my storage. Storage attributed to email actually increased from 1.5GB to 1.6 GB when I deleted most of the mail. So:
1. Why can't I limit the number of emails are downloaded on to my phone?
2. What is this occupied storage used for? (I've deleted my mail and my trash box) If it is not used for anything, how can I regain the space?
3. After deleting vitually all my messages in three accounts, why does mail still occupy almost all available storage, and how can I change that?
4. Why can't I use icloud to offload or reduce some of this storage? I'm paying for it, but I can't use it.
Is this a dirty secret? Why isn't anyone talking about this? Are mmonis and I the only ones. It prevents use of the Iphone for any other purpose. I can't afford to add apps or music, and I do not have space to download even one movie or tv show from the store. In fact, in order to upgrade I deleted apps to free up several GB of storage, but I didn't get it back.
If this cannot be fixed, I want the old operating system back.

Don't feel so bad. I deleted every message in my iPhone mail app and it's still using 4.2 GB of space!
Someone on another thread said they deleted their email account and then reinstalled and that cut the amount of space it was taking up by more than half. I tried it and it worked for me. But, it is creeping back up again so I am not sure if this is a long term solution.
I tried that with one of my mail accounts last night. I have 7 accounts for different purposes. The one I use most I deleted and re-added. It reduced the amount of space mail was using (viewed on the iPhone, Settings>General>Usage) by 1.9 GB. Now I will have to try it with other accounts and see how much more it reduces it.
I am also having this issue.
It seemed that mail was never taking up a lot of space before, but after iOS7, it is the top app under usage. Messages is right behind it, and that was never the case before, either.
Is there no explanaion or solution yet?
I am also noticing the same thing. I have cleaned all of the trash, inbox, sent folders and still have 1.3 GB and it is climbing. It appears to me to be an Apple software issue. I wish there was also a Delete all function beyond the trash folder. Since this is on the Apple website, aren't they responding?
Since I deleted a mail account and reclaimed couple GB of space it hasn't grown. After I readied the account it downloaded a couple hundred messages I had already read, but had not been deleted from the server (I have iPhone set to not delete messages from the server, my iMac does that). So my suspicion is the database that keeps track of what messages have been downloaded to the device was large, but I don't really know. Anyway, try deleting a mail account and then adding it back. It's really easy to do.
thanks it's great it that helps, but for a $450 billion market cap company, there should be an easier solution. Sounds to me like Ios 7 changed something, maybe they are trying to push people up to the 32 GB phone. By the way, for 16 GB, $100 upcharge seems like a lot in today's market. Memory is really cheap now.
Could anyone/apple genius have a solution for this problem? Thanks!
Yes I'm also interested in a solution. Cannot update to 7.03 since I have to little space left. Now 1,7 GB of mail!
Since mid Oct when I deleted and rea-added a mail account which repossessed almost 2GB of space it hasn't grown to take up more. So I would strongly suggest trying that for those who don't have enough space to upgrade to iOS 7 or otherwise need more space. While its something Apple should fix, sitting around waiting for them to do so isn't a great answer. it's super easy to delet an account and add it back again. Just a few fields to fill out and it's done.
The Apple rep walked me thru the fix - tedious but it worked: Back up your data onto your computer thru Itunes, Reinstall IOS7, restore your data.
After my first install of IOS7, Mail soared to taking up the most space acc. to Usage. I removed EVERY trace of emails - trash, sent, etc. but still it was 650 mb. When I did as above, the Usage for Mail is now 1mb! The process apparently cleared some more space too since I gained at leact 2 gigs.
Good luck.
I tried restoring the iPhone, then restoring a backup. It took care of my mail storage problem. Time will tell if it will grow crazy again.
I did this as well last night and it cleared about 3.5 gigs but the today it started creeping back up and now It's at 3 gigs. This *****!
Check your mail settings. If it is set to push the mail over, it will send your entire inbox. Some people have 1000's of old emails in their inbox.
