iPhone 4 restoring error (16)

I bought an iPhone 4 a few days ago and went to set it up as per usual. When I set it up, i did it from a back up like usual but from then on ive had nothing but problems. Firstly the set-up didnt work and got an error message that it could not be activated the phone. Tried it again, got same error. Then it ended up in recovery mode, tried to restore the phone, its get to the end of the recovery and get an error message "An unknown error occurred (16)" Entered the phone in DFU mode as well and tried same thing, still get same error message. Tried restoring from both a downloaded iOs and directly off the Apple server for both methods. Nothing seems to work. Anyone have any ideas as to what/where i should do next. Thanks.

Hello all,

I just fixed my iphone today afternoon. I try to use the JB software ''tinyumbrella reds0ow and iREB'' to fix recovery mode. And after doing that, I can recover my iphone by itunes and no error(16). Just simple and works. You can google the ''fix recovery mode" keyword. There are many tutors and explaintion for your reference.

sorry for my English!!

I don't think megacoke has read my previous posts when I commented that i had tried all three of the software he claims fixed his phone. I repair computers, tablets and phones for a living and can honestly say that I have tried everything technically possible to fix this error. It now seems it is up to someone at apple to identify the cause and supply a fix.

I have the same error and tried also all suggestions in this thread without any success.

The reason why I tried to restore my iPhone was that it displayed a message something like: "Your iPhone cannot recieve calls, please restore in iTunes". The iPhone had no GSM connection anymore, WiFi still worked.

I tried to reboot my iPhone but it crashed during booting. Then I tried to restore ending with error 16 at about 95% during restoring of the firmware.

As I said, nothing to fix the error worked. What did work was a downgrade to iOS 5.1.1. iOS could be loaded successfully, but no network connection was possible (neither GSM, 3G or WiFi), rendering it useless. I tried again to restore/update to iOS7, ending again with error 16.

So I am pretty sure it is related to the modem firmware. It might also be a hardware defect of the modem. I hope Apple could fix this problem very soon by a new software version, before I pay 160 EUR for a replacement.

That was the same problem on my gsm phone. I believe ios 7 either corrupt the modem firmware or burned out the chip. I can try reballing a new modem on and se what happens. But so far from what I am seeing is that all the phones with this error had problems with their signal, including the iPad. Apple should replace any defective device for free, even if out of warranty.

Unknown error (16) - This problem has had me for weeks since trying to upgrade to IOS 7. I've tried everything 10 times and spent nearly 4 hours on the phone with Apple support, but no fix! However, I have managed to fix this issue tonight so hope this works for some of you. This was done using a PC running Windows 7.

Uninstall all Apple software (no need to switch off any security software as stated elsewhere)

Install latest iTunes

Ensure you uninstall the .ipsw file from the "iPad Software Updates" folder or equivalent iPod or iPhone folder depending what device you have. These folders can be found in c:\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes this step is very important! The AppData folder is hidden by default so you will need to type the above path into a run command to access the folder.

Plug in iPhone or iPad and restore via iTunes downloading the very latest IOS 7 version 7.0.2 seems to do the trick.

Good luck.
