My MacMail-> Preferences->Fonts and Colors->Message list font is stuck on Lucida Grande 16, gives no choice of other fonts and especially sizes to select. Similarly Message font and Fixed-width font boxes are frozen.. Turning Mail off/on does not help. What else to try? Or fix!

If you go to Mail menu/Format/Show Fonts (command T) are other font options available?
Perhaps one or more corrupted fonts?
Open Fontbook (in the Applcations folder).
Select all the fonts (command + A). Then, File / Validate Fonts.
thanks both. I see many font styles, and sizes, there (quickest way is Mail--> Format-->Show Fonts), but have no clue as how to choose among them. Tried clicking on them, and restarted Mail, but no change in what style or size of what comes up.
Frank, this menu should allow you to change the default font, also try starting a message, selecting everything you have typed and then in the new mail header go to the A [show format bar]. You can change the fonts for the mail you are working on this way but it does not reset the default font.
Unfortunately not sure what I have done, but problem has gone away. Box shown in Stihimania reply above was what was "stuck" , non responsive, in my original cry for help. Now it works; Also I did not understand "Select" buttons merely bring up a small menu box, and it's whatever you highlite there is what you get, but I swear previously it was unreponsive. Small remaining problem is that in Mail, New Message, the "To", "cc" and "subject" lines are still in a small font and I do not seem to have any choices. (Maybe it is now clear I am dealing with an eye problem!!). Thanks all.
When using the Select button, try changing the Collections column to get access to more font options.
When composing a new e-mail fill in the 'To" or other sections, then select the text and use the text size above the 'To' to increase font size.
