iOS 7 wifi "unable to join the network"

I have an iPhone 5 that I upgraded to iOS 7 on 9/18/13. My phone and wifi connections worked fine until this morning 9/21.

Now when I have tried connecting to 2 different wifi networks, my phone is giving me the message "unable to join the network." I don't know why this is happening, has anyone else had this issue?

Wifi has worked the past few days since I completed the update to iOS 7. It has shown as connected a few times today, but no data will load when this happens. I am hesitant to restore the entire phone unless I am sure it will fix the issue.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

I've been involved in the post from the inception. Since my original resolution I have had no issues with my iPhone 5.

I've noticed quite a few folks saying they can connect with the 5Ghz but not the 2.4Ghz. There's a reason why this might be happening that an Apple tech taught me. The proliferation of 2.4Ghz wifi leads to interference issues with neighbors. I live fairly close to other residents and they all have 2.4 wifi. The interference was only effecting my iPhone 5 but nothing else. The reason for this is the lower power/receiving capablity of the phone itself compared to higher power laptops and misc wifi gear. The tech had me switch to 5Ghz on my ATC and then did a test to see if there were others in the area using the frequency; there was no one. Since that switch I've been pretty solid. Occassionally, I lose range on 5Ghz but doing a hard reset on the ATC resolves that issue.

I hope this info helps.

Thanks Tom,

Sadly, for many of us we have to reply on the settings available in our routers. Here's a screenie of my wi-fi options. Not much!

Also, the solution to use 5Ghz networks doesn't help when attempting to use public networks or when at a family or friends house. This is most definitely a problem with the device and more likely a hardware issue (signal strength).

I'm now resigned to the fact that I will have to struggle on until my contract is up when I can either get a new iPhone or an alternative.

Thanks

I read your post with great interest. I'm going to have Comcast replace my modem for me as a result. But you mentioned you helped the tech keep your same network name and password. Can you please tell us how you instructed him/her to do that? Many times Apple products scare the techs and they seem helpless. If I knew what to tell the technician I'd be able to keep my network name and password, just as you did.

Thanks,

Marylyn

So here is what I discovered:

After enduring the "unable to connect" issue for months - trying all the above suggestions without success, I finally replaced my iPhone 5 (thankfully still under warranty from my Carrier).

I received my new phone, but discovered that it was installed with iOS 6.

Lo and behold, my wifi issue seemed resolved.

I still wasn't sure if it was a hardware problem or a software (iOS 7) problem.

I consulted an Apple repair place before I dared to upgrade to iOS 7.

After discussing my problem, they were 80% confident it was a hardware issue (ie. antenna).

So I bit the bullet and upgraded.

It was stressed that this be done with the iPhone physically connected to a computer!!

DO NOT UPGRADE with Wifi!

Et voila! The problem is no more!

I was shown the inside of an iPhone5 and saw how fragile the antenna connection is.

This seemed to explain why it worked at close range to the router and not at a distance.

Hope this helps.

I had the same prob. I went into my dlink settings online and saw that security was set up for WPA, but my iphone 4s was showing security as "none" . Now, I don't know why this happened because I didn't do anything to my iphone settings and it worked fine last nite. In any event, I changed my iphone settings to WPA, shut off the wifi on the iphone for 10 seconds, turned it back on, and presto, it connected. You will need to know your dlink password, because once you shut off the wifi (and I also hit "forget this network " to clear things out), you will initially have to log back in the first time it connects. After that, your iphone will search for the known dlink network and connect automatically without a password after the first time. hope this helps
