WIFI disabled - Greyed out since iOS 7 update on iphone 4s

My 4s has had no WIFI issues until i updated to iOS 7. after the update it worked for about 20 hours then disabled. I noticed my wifi was no longer connected, i checked the wifi was on and it was, still unable to connect i restarted the phone and now the WI-FI button is grey, dim and wont switch on. However Bluetooth does work fine, so I’m thinking it’s not the chip.

network setting reset

factory reset..... itunes crashed while restoring my data so now unable to re-sync my personal data

battery drain

freezer

nothing seems to fix this issue ! after reading forums it seems a similar thing happened when iOS 6.x.x was released, my 4s is out of warranty, apple seem to be taking no responsibility for the issue, clearly caused by the update as had zero issues until that point… which I find “convenient” as it so happens to co-inside with new iphone launches.

Please help anyone in the same boat ?

not a happy camper!

Is it still working? When I updated to iOS 7.0.3 the WiFi turned back on pretty much right away but it was very short lived, and even still it wouldn't reliably connect.

Can anybody else confirm or deny whether iOS 7.1 has resolved the disabled WiFI issue?

No, they cannot. Only developers have access to 7.1 Beta, and therefore, are prohobited from public discussion, as with all iOS betas.

Once it's released for public discussion, we can talk about it here.

Yes, it's prohibited and admins already deleted my last comment. OK, I understand now that mentioning betas are not allowed here but this will not change the fact that after all my investigations and attempts to fix this issue I can say, that this is a hawrdare related issue and no iOS update will fix it. So you have only 4 options now:

1. Try to fix it by yoursefl but this can be very difficult and dangerous and results may not be guaranteed and you can eventually destroy your phone - I'm gonna try it anywway, I have nothing to lose.

2. Pay apple 199$ for refurbish if you live in a country with appstores available (not an option for me)

3. Use the phone without wifi and bluetooth (not an option for me, I cannot stand crippled products)

4. Smash the phone on the wall (after you've tried point 1 without success 🙂), forget on Apple and buy different brand (I would like to prevent this)

There are way too many people having this problem, one person I know had to get a whole new phone, others got it replaced via warranty, this is a problem caused by the update itself, the update over works the chip, the chip stops working. You can update to a newer version but it won't help fix the problem, going back to a previous version won't help you either. Apple released phones that had garbage wifi chips in them that can not run optimally on ios 7. They need to take the update down for 4s users & replace any phones having this issue. It's their problem not the consumers. I am a huge apple fan but this is insane. Here's a name you might remember apple... Steve Jobs.

That's right, we miss you Steve. Apple never will be the same. Do you remember when Apple fired Steve and then beg him to get back ? Steve saved Apple that time but this time there is no leading person to hold the right course. Look at that fancy iOS7 style. Look at iPhone size... Would Steve let this to ever happen? No. Would Steve ignore wifi chips hardware issues ? Maybe, but he was a perfectionist so most probably he would take an action to help us. I can't believe that Apple just ignore this issue. There are thousands of people affected and lot of stories over the internet... No action.

Yes, update to iOS7 just accelerated the process of failure but this problem exists from the very beginning. It's hard to say if wifi chips itself are damaged or if it is a bad technology of soldering that cause the issues. In any case I've ordered two types of new wifi chips from China and will take the risk to replace them on my own because I already lost all my beliefs that Apple will ever resolve this issue. But first I will try reflow and replacement in the worst case 🙂 I'm a electrotechnician so I'm kinda keen in such things, so fingers crossed...

I just started having a problem this last week where my iPhone 4s would default to 4G and not pick up any local WiFi. I manually turned on the WiFi for three days and now it is greyed out. I did a soft reboot, hard reboot and reset my settings. Still is out. I, at first, thought it was an underhanded ploy to rack up $$ for those who overshot their data packages. I tried to call Apple and I am on hold, transfered and get a busy signal. Tried for 1 hour today. Called AT&T who suggested I go to an Apple Store since some of their customers have told them their phones were being replaced by refurbished phones. The appointments for the Apple Store are booking 48 hours and out right now. I was told that Best Buy is have a sale on 4c 16GB for $50 but may end tomorrow.

I think everyone should write to the Attorney General and complain. I am planning on doing it tonight. Between the cost of the 4s plus the cables, extra chargers and Otter boxes, I'm in deep. I really don't want to go to a 5 and rebuy all the accessories. My phone is just 1.5 years old, off warranty and Apple wants $19 just for a technician to diagnose the problem. We all know the problem, why should I pay to have someone give me the same diagnosis.

I'd like to hear from anyone who is off warranty and has their phone replaced by Apple.

Well, welcome aboard 😟 I don't think you find many people who replaced the phone by Apple because it costs $199 for refurbished model. People are not willing to do so because their phones are only more than one year old and in perfect condition except this wifi ****** thing. And even they replaced them, they can't be sure this will not happen in the near future again... It's a lottery, millions of phones are affected. My phone is only 3 months old, a new one piece. I've got it replaced after 1,5y becose the previous one died. And now it's crippled because of this. I use wifi very often so this is a real bad thing for me. Apple doesn't want to take responsibility, otherwise it would be a precedence. But it would be honest for them to take all the affected phones back and replace them for free. Or maybe replace them for 5s for some ammount of extra money. This would be fair. Apple's quartal revenues is arounf 40 billions of follars and profit is appx 9 billions, so is this really a problem to be fair ? Seems so...

So the only thing I can recommend you to fix it yourself. Hair drayer technique could help for few weeksm but I would recommend ro replace the chip. However, this is not an easy thing.

I am in Perth Australia and am now on my 3rd replacement phone due to wifi geying out. Apple this is pathetic. My 'replacement phone' with the latest ios 7.0.4 is 3 DAYS OLD! Guess what - no wifi. Started playing up the moment I got home - wifi would pick up and constantly drop out. Battery seemed useless too I wasnt even using the phone and it would drain quickly.

i have tried all the resets etc etc and now its permanently greyed out AGAIN.

This means I have to return to the store to get another replacement phone - reload all my apps etc etc etc. How convienient. I didnt upgrade my last phone because I had heard of all the wifi issues but the shop 'refurbished' model has to come with it?

Thanks so much Apple - I cant wait until June when I can upgrade to an Android.

yeah I know mate. i have cooled it off in the fridge and as soon as it comes out wifi springs back into life. This is short lived however as soon as it reaches room temp it drops out. Its not greyed out but searches for wifi (i'm right next to my modem) if i try and reset then it greys out.

So sick of this - Tomorrow I have to back into Perth to get another replacement, this time I will make sure to ask if the replacement is compatible with the probem wifi chips I have been reading about

I went to the Apple Store, waited 2 days for a 10 min. discussion, and was told the classic "out of warranty and could repair it for $199". The Apple guy said it is not IOS upgrade. It is mostly likely your phone was already having problems and IOS identified it. It failed because of the existing issues with the phone. No matter what I said he just stared at me listening (or not) and would say I'm sorry but it is out of warranty. My phone isn't 1.5 years old yet.

With everyone experiencing the same problems, as I said before, write your Attorney General and any consumer advocate vehicle. Just complaining does not make anything positive happen. The responsibility of making this right lies with Apple and if everyone is paying for a replacement or upgrading, it is more money for Apple. Samsung is capitalizing on Apple's disregard to their loyal customers. Already 50% of my friends have switched and I am seriously considering it.
