WIFI disabled - Greyed out since iOS 7 update on iphone 4s

My 4s has had no WIFI issues until i updated to iOS 7. after the update it worked for about 20 hours then disabled. I noticed my wifi was no longer connected, i checked the wifi was on and it was, still unable to connect i restarted the phone and now the WI-FI button is grey, dim and wont switch on. However Bluetooth does work fine, so I’m thinking it’s not the chip.

network setting reset

factory reset..... itunes crashed while restoring my data so now unable to re-sync my personal data

battery drain

freezer

nothing seems to fix this issue ! after reading forums it seems a similar thing happened when iOS 6.x.x was released, my 4s is out of warranty, apple seem to be taking no responsibility for the issue, clearly caused by the update as had zero issues until that point… which I find “convenient” as it so happens to co-inside with new iphone launches.

Please help anyone in the same boat ?

not a happy camper!

I dont know if this helps any one or not but I had the same issues as mentioned in the original post and I managed to fix my iphone 4s running 7.0.3 using my stove. I used the electric stove to heat up the top end of the phone till the heat warning came up by holding and waving the phone above the stove to heat it gently & slowly. ( I did this as I didnt have a hair dryer).

Once the heat warning came up I switched the phone off then stuck it in a zip lock bag and put it in the freezer for 3-4 mins to cool it down

once the phone was cooled down I turned it back on and what do you know the Wifi was working.

I then went and upgraded the phone to IOS 7.0.6 (currently the latest) like a good little apple client staying up to date. and for crying out loud the WIFI was greyed out again.

I repeated my procedure to of using the stove etc and once the phone had cooled down again the wifi was back working again.

It appears that there is some sort of programming inserted in the ios7x.x (any version of ios7) that causes the wifi to turn off on iphone 4s only. from the you tube video's I have watched it appears that this is a ploy to get everyone to buy/ upgrade to a new iphone 5. If you ask apple support they will tell you the phone is stuffed as the hardware has burnt out and you need to buy a new one. This is not true as the problem is not a hardware issue it is a software issue. The fix I mentioned above will continue to work until I upgrade my phone's IOS again and then I will need to go thru the heat fix procedure again.

I must also urge that doing a procedure as I have mentioned above you do at your own risk and I hold no liability for any damages as I am only letting you know how I fixed my problem.

Hello,

I had the same issue as you and it occured after the IOS upgrade. On top of the Wi-Fi issue the phone is slow and I hate the overall look of the phone. Before I had the Wi-Fi issue I asked at the Apple store about the other problems I was experiencing since the upgrade, and the response was "Oh yeah we heard about that but it doesn't happen on the newer models". That's just great. So Apple does an IOS upgrade and screws their customers that have older model phones and thier solution for ther customers with this issue is to upgrade the phone at the customers expense. Way to go Apple! At the very least, they should offer a downgrade which they dont. I was happy with the phone until they did the upgrade and now I am stuck with a piece of junk. My last visit to the apple store was a disaster as well. When I went back for the Wi-Fi issue, I had an appointment but they had customers standing in a line a mile long that already had appointments. I left the store in frustration and also wrote to Apple about the phone and the bad experience I had at the store. Of course, Apple never responds to negative feedback they just ignore thier customer's problems and let them stagnate. I am going to solve the problem by going with a non-apple phone. I wish you luck solving your issue.

I don't know how much more I can help you other than tell you what I did to fix mine. I did the heat up fix and put it in freezer and it work.

All I can say is try it again.

I watched a you tube video that explained it step by step and that's all that I did

Heat up the top end of the phone slowly till the heat warning and then switch it off and put it in freezer for a couple of mins to cool down and then switch back on. There are no other tweeks that I know of.

Can I stress again this is not a hardware fault. It is a software bug. If it was a hardware fault you would not be able to do the heat tweet and get it functioning again. The sheer fact that you can trick the processor into saying the antenna is there proves that.

Having said that I haven't upgraded to 7.1 yet so I can not say but I'll have to see what are the changes in 7.1 to see if it even warrants moving up to it first. My opinion is if there's no dramatic changes for the 4s then I don't see the point in upgrading just yet.

I had been a happy Apple user till today. It seemed that they are leaning towards their MS counterparts, devicing bugs to force people to buy antivirus software. In Apple's case, the results are more detrimental ... a software upgrade causes a $600+ device to stop working. The answers on this forum proved very helpful, a 3 day old iphone 4s stopped working, i.e. the wifi chip is disabled. Obviously, replacing the phone is not a viable option when it is past warranty, it costs $200. The depreciation of the initial phone costing so much should not hit such low in 2 years, what does it say about an apple product?

Anyway, the hardest part to swallow in all this is my companion for 2 years died all of a sudden, the wifi stopped working on my 4s right after the 7.1 upgrade. And the first thing the genius suggested is replace it at a cost of $200. What kind of geniuses are they hiring nowadays? Since when did Apple start being all about money and not quality? Isn't that what I became an Apple user in the first place for? I used to boast that I support a company whose products are priced higher than other brands, but they are the epitome of quality and service. Alas, this ceases to be the case anymore. Maybe we need a new player in the market, a "hard banana" to replace both MS and Apple.

I have the exact same problem, I updated to iOS 7.1 after work, everything was ok. I then woke up the next morning and noticed that the WiFi symbol wasn't displayed on the home screen. I thought that it was my router so I reset that but it still didn't connect. I then checked the WiFi settings on the phone and was displayed with the message Wifi Not Available. I have since been researching and tried many of the fixes to no avail. I have not tried the freezer or the hairdrier fix though and I don't think that I will be.

However after reading through this post I am shocked at how Apple are treating this "issue". It is clear to me that this is a SW induced HW failure, and I cannot believe that Apple are not taking responsibility for it. My phone is out of the 1 year Apple warranty, and I certainly will not be paying for something I believe Apple to have broken. I have read that Apple has had to extend their warranty to 2 years to meet the EU regulations, whether this is true or not I am not certain, but I will certainly be ringing Apple when I get home to see if I can try and get a replacement.

Luckily I am due to upgrade next month, but I will not be getting another iPhone.

My iPhone 4S did once again did lose it's wifi connection after running perfectly for about 8 weeks.

I was streaming Pandora Radio via bluetooth connection at the time, ( not sure if that has anything to do with why the wifi dropped out again, but I thought I'd mention it anyway)

But!.... I was able to get everything up and running perfectly again by simply grabing my girlfriend's hair dyer heated it up again for about 5 - 7 minutes ( the over heated message even appeared this time) then powered it off, warped it in a plastic bag, stuck it back in the freezer for 15 minutes, took it out of the freezer, powered it back on, and Abracadabra it works perfectly again!!!

Phone has been running perfectly AGAIN for about a week now.

One strange thing this time after fixing it for a second time is that the the little WiFi symbol no longer shows at the top of the screen, but the wifi connection and everything IS RUNNING PERFECTLY!

If all I've got to do once in a while, is spend about 20 minutes with a hairdryer and a freezer to keep my iPhone 4S running perfectly.....well I'm as happy as a pig in s*** :-)

And please no comments about how I have now voided my apple support etc. I never had any to begin with (it's a 2nd hand phone and I really couldn't care less about warranty issues etc etc etc..... The phone works, and that's all that matters to me!

Check out this video on YouTube on how to fix your phone problems by heating and freezing it. I'd provide a direct link for you all but every time do it gets deleted for whatever reason so instead go to youtube a search the following....

" IOS7 Phone 4S Broken or Greyed out WiFi "

PS .... It's NOT MY VIDEO AND IT ASKS FOR NO MONEY!

Yes, it is only question of time when the issue occurs again. This trick can be repeated many times but hairdryer is less powerful that blowing right on the chip. However, the problem with this is that if you not use the phone much it can hold for months but if you use your phone heavily - lot of heat is produced and this is not good for wifi and your phone will fail again in very short time. That's the reason why for someone this can work for months and for others only few days/weeks. This can be fun for 2 - 3 times but then it become annoying and you have only two options - live with that or buy a new phone. For me to be a slave of the phone and hairdrayer is not an option 🙂

Btw, if the wifi icon is not there it can't work. You probably use celular data instead of wifi...

Mislak wrote. "Btw, if the wifi icon is not there it can't work. You probably use celular data instead of wifi..."

You'd think so, but I am absolutely certain ! that even with the wifi icon not showing it is definitely not useing any cellular data. I've verified in a multitude of ways, that even with no WiFi icon present, it is still only useing a WiFi connection.
