iphone 5s bubble level can not be calibrated

Got the iPhone 5s and testing the new bubble level but it is off by 3-4 degrees.

On a flat surface if you stand the phone up right with the bottom of the phone on the surface, I get a perfect 0 degree with green, but if you stand it on the right side of the phone (other side of the volume button) I get 3-4 degree off. Shouldn't I get the same results unless the gyroscope sensor is off? The compass calibration doesn't seem to correct the problem.

Just to throw my two cents in. I downloaded an app called Clinometer which is kind of like the native level and inclometer in the compass app. Mine is also 3 degrees off on level surface. Using the Clinometer app it shows the same 3 degrees off on a level surface. Then I go through the calibration instructions for the app and try again on the same surface and it now is level. Same for the inclometer, shows .5 degrees up. If the app calibration works assuming it uses the same sensors that the compass app uses then a simple calibration fix from Apple might do the trick.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my iPhone 5S. Definitely a widespread issue. Demo units in Apple store have same issues as well. I just compared my 5S with 3 other iPhone 5 phones. iPhone 5 phones all are level, 0 degrees on both their back and side on flat surface. My iPhone 5S is off by 4 degrees while on its back and 2 degrees while on its side. I sure hope this can be fixed with a software update very soon. Affects many apps and functions of the phone. My compass is off as well. I especially hope Apple at least release some sort of acknowledgment soon as well so 5S owners know what to expect.

Come on you guys. Don't you realize you're using the phone wrong! Don't you ever learn? Just like how Apple made sure to tell us that our reception was bad because we were holding the phone wrong, here we are again.

Don't you worry. Apple will soon release their statement that your pinky has to be in the right place for the sensors to work correctly. 😉

Tables maybe. Floors? Not likely, unless your house is 100 years old or your builder learned his trade from watching TV. 2 degrees, over 8 or 10 feet is a huge amount - visible by the naked eye. My ceilings are 9'. Therefore, if you're saying that my iphone is accurate, and it's my walls that are out by 2 or 3 degrees, that would mean every wall in my house is obviously not square....I think I should leave before the house collapses.

Software - most likely

I spoke to an Apple Tech Supervisor last night and with him providing his direct phone number, I called him back today after doing some testing. He told me that Apple is indeed aware of this issue and has made it a high priority and they’re almost certain that it’s a software issue with the M7. Should see a fix soon and most likely in version 7.0.3 he said. He said the issue is wide spread and mostly all iphone 5s are affected. By tapping on the level and setting it to 0 does not recalibrate it but only offsets it by the amount it’s off. If then you flip your phone over 180 degrees, the difference will now be 2x the amount of the offset. If you download the app iHandy Level and place it on a surface and calibrate it to 0 degrees and then flip it 180 degrees, it should still indicate 0 or perfectly level. The Apple supervisor informed me that the sensor is not defective and that it proves that it’s a software issue with the calibration. I hope this helps.
