This was actually the most useful answer.

To anyone having this issue: Make sure only ONE mail is turned on. For my case, I had a yahoo and Gmail account's "Mail" turned on both at once - it automatically turns them on if you ever create both. Simply only have one account with mail turned on.

My assumption is that once one has both turned on, it doesn't know which account to send mail from, or it tries to send from both at once and seizes up.

Thank you (very, very, very much!) I've been messing with my settings on my phone; the mail and photo apps, and general settings, and couldn't figure out why my phone suddenly was ostracizing the Mail app. I was counting on having this to send some important photos I'd promised my work mates. After trying other suggestions, and getting no where, I was about to head to an Apple store, but read your message, and parceled out the photos through several e-mails instead of just one. This is exactly it; I used to be able to select quite a few photos, and then e-mail them, with no restriction it seemed (at least not on my phone's end, though my e-mail server may've kicked the message back due to quota limitations), but once I split them up, the Mail icon became available again in the Photo app. Either I have a bad memory, or this is a new feature.

Ever since I've uploaded Yosemite on my Mac and iOS 8.1.1 on my phone, it's been one struggle after another. I can't thank you enough for your post!!

I might actually, for once, have an answer here. All of the above helped me work through EXACTLY the same problem the OP had - it asked me to set up a new Google account, then told me that it was already there. . .

I do NOT use Mail - EVER - and had turned it off in my settings at some point over the past few months. I suspect there may be others like me who use the gMail app rather than Mail.

So just by chance I happened to be in Settings/ Mail, Contacts etc/ Gmail and noticed Mail was turned off. I turned it back on and went back to the photo I was trying to email and it sent first time without having to even turn the phone off and on again.

😀

I REALLY hope this helps someone - I have never been able to offer an answer before.

I had the same problem. My only options were message, twitter, and Facebook. What I did was I copied the pictures that I wanted to send, went to mail, pasted the pictures into an email and sent it. What I did not expect to find was that mail is now an option for me when I choose "next" after selecting several pictures. It seemed to take care of the problem.

What I (and maybe a lot of other people) didn't know was that Apple, in there infinite wisdom, drops the Mail icon from your share menu when the selected pics exceed the servers email size limit. No explanation, no option to control, the Mail icond just disappears, leaving me (and everyone else) to wonder why? What happened? What is wrong with my iPhone? Apple, thank you for the frustration of wondering why and trying to figure this out. Please, next time just let me adjust the pic size when I get to Mail like I can when I copy and paste into an email.

Is your GMail account working?

Have you done the 4 Rs basic troubleshooting steps?

Restart:

1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.

2. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data

Under Mail section I can select: Preview, Show to, Flag Style, Ask before deleting, Load remote images, Organize by thread, Always BCC myself, Increase quote level and Signature. Then it goes to contacts. Where would I select default account? When I go into Mail, Contacts, Calendar, under accounts, it has iCloud, Gmail and Add Account. So the gmail is already there? When I click on Gmail, it shows my email address and is green for mail, calendars and notes. Thanks for responding.

I have the new IOS7. It has been sporadic since I downloaded it. Worked fine before. Yes, I can send/receive fine on my gmail on the phone, but it doesn't recognize the gmail automatically anymore when I try to send a pic from the photo app. There isn't a "set default" option under signature on my phone. It jumps to contacts. I got it to work temporarily by going into the mail settings, turning the toggle to off, then back on, and it worked last night. Today doesn't work again.

Hi, my email started working again for sending images without me doing anything, then it stopped, and I couldn't even open my gmail from my phone. The iphone screen showed I had unread mail for my gmail, but when I clicked on it, it asked me to add my email account. I think there is some kind of bug in the IOS. The issue comes and goes.

I have exactly the same problem. I deleted my account, turned off the phone, signed back in and re-created my account. I tried to email a photo, and I get that cool sound it makes when it sends, but nothing showed up in my inbox. When I checked the outbox on my phone, there's my email with a red ! next to it. Now what??

I had this problem too. I would take a photo with the default Apple iPhone 5s iOS7 app, try to send it to myself (and others) from the Photo app by email, and I'd hear the Sent whoosh, but I woud never get the email, nor would any other recipients.

I reset the network settings, did a soft reset, the whole routine. Finally, I got Apple Support to call me. The tech guy had me delete my Gmail app, then do the soft reset, then turn the phone off and leave it off for about 2 minutes. I then reinstalled the Gmail app, set it up again, and now I'm able to send photos again from within the Photos app.

We'll see if the good news persists.
