Might be old news by now, but

Hi

Had same problem-2 solutions

1-on the left side is a swith above the volume control-if" the orange is visible it is set to "SILENT"

2- going to settings-general-accessibillity-scroll to assistive touch and turn it on.

Then you have a white circle on black square icon -tap- tap on device- tap on Mute/Unmute- Try and see if that solved the ringer problem. If it has, go back and turn assistive touch off- that might also solve the problem.

Option 1 is the most likely cause for not ringing I discovered, but option 2 might reveal the hidden muted sound issiue as well.

Hope this helps

HEY YEAH!! THIS IS HELPFUL TO ME!!

I got my solution on this problem from RYAN HEALEY's post: All I went through of fixing it, all the possibilities that causes why there is no ringtone sound when somebody is calling me while all the rest like music, alarm, games, etc are working fine. After reading the idea from Ryan Healey, I checked my phone to find where is the switch can be located & I found the switch on the left side of my phone. The button switch was pressed down so no matter what I do, there really NO SOUND at all.

You need to MAKE SURE the SWITCH on the left side of your phone (Iphone 5S) is ALWAYS TURNED UP. After this you can expect the sound to the FULLEST!!

Thank you RYAN HEALEY, you gave me the idea!!

And this is still the problem after (likely as you say) updates in August 2016. You think they would have fixed this by now. Thank you so much for posting this solution!!

EDIT: Hitting reply I see it doesn't duplicate the post I am replying to or put this under her post...

Here is what she suggested and it was the problem after an update for me too:

Go to:

Settings -> do not disturb -> allow calls from -> change from favorites to everyone

Guys & Girls, I came upon this series of posts as I have an iPhone5S. I have tried each of the suggested solutions buttery as I may my phone will not ring or vibrate when it is 'locked'. When I go to 'Do Not Disturb' at the bottom of the page I have two options under 'Silence' - the first is 'Always' and the second is 'Only while the iPhone is locked'. I only have the option of one or the other. For security reasons I have set my phone to automatically locked after 30 seconds of inactivity. Over the past four days I have missed several very important calls. Any suggestions as to how I can get my phone to ring when it is locked. Best to all - G

Many thanks for this, and other suggestions, on how I can get my iPhone5 to ring when it is locked. It would appear the issue is with the options provided by Apple. In the 'settings' tab under 'Do Not Disturb' at the bottom of the page there are two options for 'Silence'. One is 'always' and the other if 'Only while the iPhone is locked'. The options are either/or. So Apple have, in their infinitive wisdom decided not to offer a third option of allowing the iPhone5 to ring when locked. Crazy or what ...........!!? Looking to move away from the iPhone for this and other infuriating reasons.

Just been away with a friend who has exactly there same issue in that Apple do not allow a phone to ring when locked. Very bizarre and annoying. The issue is that in 'settings' under the do not disturb options at the foot of the screen there is just two either/or options for silence - 'always' or 'only when iPhone is locked'. My phone is always locked for security reasons when I am not using it which results in my missing calls. I cannot understand why Apple do not listen to the concerns of their customers. Even more intent of moving away from the iPhone. Best to all - G

A third option: (Tried the 'accessibility' option and though it looked promising, didn't solve my problem. 😟). Click the side button down to silent, i.e. orange, then click up again. It will move from 'mute' to 'volume' level. If that volume level shows low, it's totally separate from the increase/decrease volume buttons on the side. In Settings, go to Sounds, and slide the 'Ringer and Alerts" level across to however loud is wanted. Worked for me. (Annoying to me, that the problem originated in yet another 'update'). Good luck!
