Ipad issues with Bluetooth keyboards and iOS 7

Hello,

I seem to be having a strange issue using my Belkin Keyboard folio for my iPad mini since upgrading to iOS 7. For some reason, my backspace key has starting to work like a delete key (i.e. deleting characters after the cursor, not before) and will only work normally if I hit CTRL. I thought it was an issue with the keyboard that just arose; when I paired it with another iPad that hasn't been upgraded to iOS 7 it seems to be working normally. Has anybody had other strange issues with external keyboards and their iPads since upgrading? I've heard it could be an issue with Bluetooth and the new operating system. As I rely heavily on my keyboard for editing and writing, having a dysfunctional backspace key is fairly annoying.

I've got a Logitech Ultrathin keyboard cover that I'd not used since upgrading my iPad 3 to iOS 7.0.2. When I came across this thread just now I turned it on and tested it out.

No problems at all aside from the fn+1 (search) key not working anymore. (Not really surprised about that given the changes in iOS 7 to search.) Pairing works, delete key works as normal backspace (and does not delete space before word deleted one char at a time), cut/copy/paste keys work, lock key (fn+del) works, media keys all work, home key works and all typing appears fine. I can unlock it using passcode entered from the keyboard as usual, don't need to tap extra key or anything onscreen, and there's no noticable latency when typing.

Whatever problem(s) you are encountering are not universal, not every BT keyboard has them. I bought my Logitech only 2-3 months ago, could be it has a later firmware version I guess? (A label on the box says 2012 though, so it can't be all that recent).

I have a Belkin Folio keyboard and iPad2 that is having intermittent issues connecting since iOS7. Rebooting the iPad seems to be the only fix, the problem will then recur in a day or so.

I do not have the issue of the Delete key becoming a Backspace, so clearly there are different issues going on. When the keyboard stops responding, MOST apps will not accept keyboard input, BUT the iPad still knows the keyboard is there because the HOME button works. I've seen that sometimes the issue seems to be elicited by one app, which then causes most other apps to fail to recognize keyboard input (the Salesforce Touch app seems to be an example of this). Once the iPad gets in this mode, a reboot is the only thing that fixes it (temporarily).

This is my second keyboard I started with a Zagg and I've grown quite attached to using a keyboard with my iPad, so a fix from Apple will be greatly appreciated!

Same issue and I am starting to get really angry. I have a Belkin keyboard case folio that I paid over $100 for in mid August. I connected it via Bluetooth and it was working just fine until I updated to iOS 7. Now the keyboard will not connect via Bluetooth at all. I have tried everything including rebooting the iPad. I also had a Belkin USB splitter on my iMac and that is no longer working with iTunes and my iPad after working for years.

I am starting to think that Apple gave us all a case of "Planned Obsolescence" and is forcing us to re-buy Apple only products. This is really lame as I just purchased the Belkin keyboard case on recommendations from the Apple tech in-store.

Need a fix here Apple. Please help your customers. Thank you!

What is most disturbing in seeing all of the issues since updating the iOS and the associated BT problems is that in all of the posts there isn't a real fix and that apple is silent on this. Are we now headed to the crazy inept world of Microsoft?

I am having a catastrophic issue. When opening a window in safari and attempting to type the iPad locks up completely and the only way to remedy the problem is with a hard reboot. My keyboard is totally useless. As a matter of fact I am typing this post on the native keyboard so as to keep from locking the iPad up.

Come on apple, make good on all for the great things that got you hear or we the consumer will bail on you as fast as we have from the blackberry and the PC.

I figured it out. Please all try this to confirm it works for you as well. It seems the "Backspace" now deletes items to the right of the cursor. You can verify this behavior too by putting the cursor in the middle of a sentence and tapping the "Backspace" key.

In order to delete things to the left of the cursor, you need to use either of the following two key combinations:

Ctrl-Backspace, or

Alt(Option)-Backspace

I have not figured out how to change that to just using "Backspace", but at least now you should be able to delete items to the left of the cursor again!!!

My Thanksgiving gift to you all!!!

Matthew

My solution:

I returned the Belkin with no issues in the shop and bought a logitech ultrathin folio. All keys work fine, it also uses the magnet to wake-up / set-asleep the ipad.

One more hint from my side: buy the darker colors. Unfortunately, the bright green version is the only one with the white keyboard, however the green cover is like a dust-magnet and will soon have a vintage look.

ipad Mini with Retina works well with Logitech Ultrathin Folio Keyboard.

@ shezcrafti

since I also bought an ultrathin keyboard folio for my girlfriends ipad Air, as christmas present* - I justed paired it, out of curiosity, with the ipad Mini Retina - it works like a charm. Hence I believe it is also compatible with iOS7 and your ipad Air.

*Officially she doesn't know about the present ... so please don't tell her.

I have a Logitech Ultrathin and have tried everything in these posts (and from various other sites.) My problem is that I get the Ultrathin to pair to the iPad okay, but certain keys (specifically t, y, and delete) do not ever work even following pairing. The same exact behavior occurs when pairing the keyboard to iPhone 5S. Prior to IOS7 it all worked beautifully and it was a great asset. Now it is just an expensive screen cover. Something went wrong in IOS7 but no one seems to acknowledge what happened. There is something that has changed in the Bluetooth interface.

I have the same problem as Teapat. My Logitech Ultrathin keyboad is paired, but the 't', 'y', and 'delete' keys (and sometimes the combination keys to show the native keyboard on the iPad, fn+3) do not work. If I tap at them endlessly, they will sometimes start to work. This only started within the last two weeks, however, and I didn't notice any problem coinciding with the iOS 7 update.

Thanks, David. I hadn't read this since mine didn't seem to be tied to the iOS 7 update (which was back in September 2013 and my problem only started 2-3 weeks ago). The keyboard does seem to be working better since I updated last night to version 7.1. Instead of having to tap the 't' key at least 50 times to get it working, I've only had to tap it 2-3 times now.

I went through the steps in the link you sent anyway, except for resetting my iPad. Right now the keyboard works well. All keys are performing as they should. I will monitor it. Thanks again for you input.

Just downloaded 7.1 yesterday, and got all excited because at first the problem seemed resolved; "t", "y" and "delete" all working correctly. Then for no reason it started acting up. Then it started working again. Unfortunately I don't think the problem has been solved, but it is working at least SOME of the time (which is perhaps more frustrating than not at all.) I wish I could figure out what makes it stop or start up again. Clearly an issue with Apple and bluetooth because the 7.1 release did have an impact when nothing else did. And yes, I have tried all the other suggestions, but none seem to completely resolve the problem.

I've been trying to fix this problem for the past month.

My wife has an iPad air with a Belkin QODE Slim Style (F5L152) that has been losing the space bar immediately after pairing. The space bar would work once each time and after that the only way to get it to work was to hit the back space once and then the space bar would work again ONCE.

This has been the same issue with 7.03 (on the iPad on startup), 7.04 ("upgrade" installed) and 7.1.

I paired the Belkin to my daughter's iPad 4 and it worked flawlessly. The iPad 4 is iOS 7.04.

After a month of frustration, I decided to try key combinations with the space bar and guess what, ALT + SPACE BAR corrected this issue. The space bar now works flawlessly.

I hope this helps others.

Hank
