This morning I may have deleted my "inbox" folder. How do I restore it? It has disappeared and meanwhile, messages keep downloading - which, of course, I can not find or access. My IPad was not affected, just the phone.

Just to clarify, I am referring to my phone emails, not text messaging.
While in the Mail app, click on the "Edit" button in the upper-right corner. This allows you to re-add the Inbox folder to your folder list.
I had tried that earlier but evidently it had not fallen in at the time. It's there. It worked. Thank you. Now for my cup of coffee.....
I had the same problem and I had tried the Edit button too, but to no avail. This time it worked a treat!

I found the inbox by clicking on edit, but I have no idea how to add it back into my mailboxes. It doesn't drag. Clicking on it makes a check mark appear or disappear. What do I do?
SO WHAT DID YOU DO? I read that you can ADD the inbox back while in edit mode but HOW?
I did use the Edit command in the top right hand corner. As I (vaguely) recall, it gave me an option to restore the Inbox. I remember having to do this more than once to get the inbox to show up. HTH.
