Do you have Microsoft Office 11 installed?
If you regularly need to edit MS Office files for work, then by far the optimal solution for you is to buy MS Office for your iMac. Only MS Office for Mac will offer you optimal compatibility with MS Office for Windows files from your workplace.
No I don't. I have Page
Apple's Pages will not open an excel file. Apple's Numbers will, but it may not be 100% compatible with MS Excel for Windows files (depends on the file, how complex it actually is).
My bad, I have numbers too. I can see some excel file that are already on my Imac but can't open anything new via e-mail
If you save the file to disc and then try to open it, does it work? Or are you trying to open them directly from the email?
I have tried both and no success
Could be the email attachments are corrupt? If the other excel files you have open and only these recent emailed ones do not, then ask the sender to resend them.
If the files are very large and complex, then it may be a compatibility issue - some things MS Excel can do really are not supported in any other "compatible" app I've ever tried to use.
Thanks
Just a personal observation: if you are asked to work on Excel files at home by your employer, then IMO it would be reasonable for them to buy the Mac version of Microsoft Office 11 for you! 🙂
Purchasing MS Office for Mac is the probable the best choice, however if I could offer another option.
I have been using Open Office for Mac, it is an open source application and works with all MS Office files, best
of all it is free.
I have been using it for about a year now and I have not had any problems exchanging MS Office files.
This is the screen shot of Open Office.Calc ( Excel )
It may solve your problem and save you some cash.
