It seems unlikely that this problem is case-related. I've had it as well, since the upgrade. I have a 5c. Yes, my case is made for the phone. I'm not sure how easy it would be to test the proximity sensor while on a call, but I will give it a try. Making an appointment to a genius bar would require an hour's drive. I hope this thread shows that this is a real problem and is worked out. It's not the cases. If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.

I too, have found this very frustrating. I can't conduct a conversation unless my earbuds are in. It's embarrassing to have you calls randomly muted or the sounds of buttons pressed in the middle of a call.

This thread is 3 years old. What is happening for you, could very well be different than what you have read in the past. It is extremely easy to test the proximity sensor when in a call. Put the call on Speaker, lay the phone on the table, place your hand in the area of the headset speaker area where the proximity sensor is located. The screen should blank. If it does not, then you can have a problem with the proximity sensor, and the only way to have that diagnosed and fixed is with Apple. I'm sorry it is an hours drive, but mine is even farther. If you are holding the phone up to your ear and the screen is not blanking, then something is wrong. This thread does demonstrate that some people and their phones have problems with the proximity sensor, and they can be corrected.
