IOS7 update - can no longer select output source for playing music

Since updating to IOS 7 i can no longer select an audio output source which means i cant play music in my car anymore.

ive restarted my phone a few times, looked in the new command centre (swipe up) as someone has told me the option should be in there, but its not.

Ideas?

iPhone 4S, iOS 7

Since you also say "I connect through the headphone jack", then it certainly sounds like you are plugged in to the iPhone and not using Bluetooth. When the iPhone detects something connected to the headphone jack, that is where the sound goes.

There has never been a way to select this as a source on the iPhone. You can select a Bluetooth or WiFi output, but not when the output is plugged directly in to the iPhone.

every time ive connected to my car ive had to change the audio source, its only since updating to IOS7 that there is no option to change the audio output. it used to come up as an orange box which you would click and select your output. The orange box no longer appears as an option.

It sounds like the "orange box" you're referring to is the AirPlay icon which is used to select between available audio outputs (AirPlay, Bluetooth, or iPhone). However, this icon only appears if you have a paired device in the vicinity of your iPhone. If there is no wireless device to connect to, then there is no such icon and the iPhone will only play from its speaker or a connected headphone output (and no icon to choose between these two).

I realize that you said your car does not support Bluetooth, but is it possible that you have (or had) a Bluetooth headset or hands-free speaker that your iPhone was paired to? If so, in order to see that icon you'd have to maybe re-pair your iPhone with it, and of course have it on and in the car.

I don't know what you could have been selecting other than that, but in any case if you have connected through the headphone jack and you're not getting any output, it is possible that you have a hardware problem, or possibly an iOS installation problem that requires a Reset or Restore of your iPhone.

I know exactly what you're talking about and have to do the same thing in my car. To get it back I had to par it to a bluetooth device and then in the music app when I swiped up there was a bar to select source as the second thing on the bottom. I have to do this is my car because my phone tries to play on sync via Bluetooth but sync doesn't support it so I have to manually switch it to the audio jack.

This helped me! I had to do one additional thing. I could see the option to switch to my car Bluetooth but it wouldn't let me select it even though it showed as connected in Bluetooth devices. But I held down my bluetooth's equivalent of the home button to activate Siri. Siri went automatically through the Bluetooth speaker and after that, the music started working again too. So thanks again, it put me on the road to success. I use a GG-smartMini-BT fm transmitter device plugged into my cigarette plug. It lets my old '97 Subaru do a remarkable amount of stuff controlled through my iPhone.

My take is ios7 is just not as smart at it used to be changing playback channels. Used to me if I used an fm transmitter or a headphone or Bluetooth it did a good job of figuring out what to do when u disconnect from that device. Now, it's just like an idiot half the time. Admittedly I have an iPhone 4 but I don't have the option of going to an iOS that is better suited for my phone as iOS 7 just kills this phone. And things like having no idea how to get sounds to come out of my phone after a disconnect kill me, among other things:

I had the same issue with how to select the device I want to play music on when more than one bluetooth device is in range. I finally found that if you swipe up from the bottom of the screen it will display volume, etc. Just below the volume is a box showing which device is playing. Touch the box and other devices will display, then select the one you want to play.

Not that you want to hear "RTFM", but this is on page 36 of the manual for using Bluetooth audio devices:
