Can't send mail . . .

As of a couple hours ago every time I try to send mail using my Apple account, I get this error:

Mail could not be sent.

The server for account "@Mac.com IMAP" returned the error "5.7.8 Bad username or password (Authentication failed).."

Your username/password or security settings may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password?

Well I know for a fact that my password is just fine because I used it to log in to iCloud and here to post this. Anyone else having any problems? I am hoping this is a typical Apple hiccup.

Thanks to you and all the other commenters for the helpful suggestions. I use Entourage 2011 (Mountain Lion 10.8.5) and started having this problem yesterday afternoon. I changed my outgoing mail server in Entourage [Entourage->Account Settings->double click account to open preferences window->under "Sending Mail" change SMTP server to p01-smtp.mail.me.com->click OK]. It worked. Now I can send emails from Entourage again.

Previously, my outgoing mail server was smtp.mail.me.com. I have a 2012 MacBook Air with exactly the same setup and strangely enough, it never stopped working. In fact, while I was having these problems on my Mac desktop, I was saving unsent emails to Drafts then pulling them up from the Drafts folder through Entourage on my Air and sending from there. But I agree with the other posters who say this is an Apple issue.

WOW! This is just plain Nutz! After reading DallasAppleMan's post I remembered I have an IMAP account set up on my 2008MBP 10.5.8 running Thunderbird. Of which if I wasn't so entrenched in Entourage I'd migrate in a nanosecond. Anyway, it will not work at all. I keep getting errors that my Mac.com (yes, I'm a Mac.com guy, have had it since it was free and iCloud does not move me at all), does not exist. BUT, it does work on my desktop with Entourage 2008. Go figure?

Once I get done getting ready for my complete satellite overhaul on Saturday, I'll play more with Thunderbird. BUT before I tried it I was thinking that this is all about finding a way to block everything but Apple Mail clients. Guess I guessed right?

I tried to add this right after I last wrote, but got a screen saying that Apple was working on the forums and that they were not available at 5pm MDT. Right.

Anyway. The eMails that failed to send, sent. Not too long after all three eMails that were still waiting in Thunderbird on my MBP to be sent, showed up on my desktop machine as they should have. So the account that does not exist, sent the eMails that it couldn't, while leaving them to be sent. My other 7 various eMail accounts work just fine. OH! and I have noticed that Entourage is running much better since I changed the SMTP. Curious.

DAM, thank for the acknowledgement, but I only opened this can of worms. Unfortunately since I am having a complete reinstall of my Satellite system Saturday, I can not devote the time I need to Thunderbird on the MBP, which by the way is running 10.8.5. Typo.

The rest of ya'all keep up the keen inquisitiveness. It gets things done. Thank you for participating.

P.S.

Since last Spring I have been having server issues when any of my eMail clients go out to get mail on the Mac.com account only. I wonder if all this is related?

Yes thanks for the acknowledgment as i indicated on my original post

I was going to thank DallasAppleMan, but apparently the credit goes to several people - sooo thanks to all the smart folks. This issue began 2 days ago for me, but I didn't have time to look at it until today. I'm using Outlook for Mac [I know Steve is turning in his grave] and I was determined it was a Microsoft issue due to recent updates, but now I stand humbly corrected.😮

Thank you, thank you, thank you! For everyone who has either figured out or shared the solution to Apple's glitch, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

The change to "p01-smtp.mail.me.com" worked right away! I have a 2012 MacBook with Office for Mac 2011 on it. Started to have this issue early last week - could not send mail from the MacBook, but iPhone and iCloud were fine. Had a short period where sending was possible, but then it stopped again yesterday. Not 100% sure, but it was my impression that when I tried to send anything with attachments it seemed to make it worse/stop the whole show again.

Anyway, thanks again! Love the Apple community!

i'm using a symbian belle phone(nokia n8) and my outgoing email also stopped sept 25th. the "p01" didn't work by itself. after reading many threads i checked my icloud settings in it's system preferences panel on my macbook pro, and i found icloud mail was unchecked(can't remember if i had done so before). after activating it in sys pref my phone email cliet started working again! i had added the "p01" earlier to no avail, not sure if it's needed, but don't want to mess with the settings now that it works.
