Error 4013 is due to security software issues. Uninstall all security software completely, try again, if the issue persists I would either recommend another computer or calling AppleCare tech support at 1-800-APL-CARE (for US customers).

Note- this is even if your device worked fine prior to iOS 7 update with your security software. The change in the operating system on the device can cause compatiability issues with these other programs.

I hope this helps it worked for me! 🙂

Also consider DFU Mode to force a restore -

  1. Plug your device into your computer.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Hold the Home button and Power button for 10 seconds
  4. Release the Power Button but keep holding the Home button
  5. Keep holding the Home button until you are alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode

Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present, device screen should remain black.

Hi, error 4013 could not restore ipad/iphone

I had the same issue as you what I did to reslove the issue was to:

1. Make sure the ipad is in restore mode (waiting for you to plug into itunes symbol)

2. Use an original ipad cable that came with it our from another ipad

3. Do not use any type of extension cable between the ipad and the pc/mac

4 Before you plug in your cable to the ipad move it to another USB port on your pc/mac one that you have not tried before or normally use

5. start itunes by right clicking on itunes run as administrator.

6. when itunes detects in recovery mode start the recovery.

7. Your pc/mac now detects the ipad hardware again and installs the driver properly again.

8. sit back and voila.

hope that helps.

Hey dude I have been refurbishing iPhones for a long time now and consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to fixing the iPhones hardware.I recently refurbished one...new screen, new power button flex(prox sensor) and new charging dock.I have done this repair so many times and never had this problem until this evening.I trawled through the Internet for hours reading blogs, changing sync cables, swapping the charging flex and trying to restore about twenty times!!!...I had just about given up and I happened to read your solution so I simply un-clipped the prox sensor and pressed restore again and to my absolute amazement it restored!Just want to say cheers from Ireland. How on earth did you figure that out?...I am amazed and I'm wondering once the phone is restored can I simply click that same prox sensor back in and use it or is the part 'corrupt' in some way and this is why there was a problem...Thanks again mate!

Had an iPad in DFU mode and an update wasn't working due to the 4013 error. My exact steps to resolve the problem were to blow in the port of the iPad, stick a needle in the port and try to scrape out any dust, then insert and remove the lightning cable 3-4 times. After that, the iPad was able to reinstall iOS when plugged into iTunes.
