iPhone 5, iOS 7: Alert/Ringtone volumes low...

I updated my black 32gb iPhone 5 to iOS 7 last week and one of the very things I noticed was how many missed calls/texts I had. I couldn't understand why until I went to change my tones to something more attention grabbing.... I noticed that the volume of the alerts and ringtones, including the classics, are too low to be useful. At first I thought it was my imagination until I went to work and my coworkers IDENTICAL phone started ringing, and boy did it sound great. Clear, crisp, loud. I compared her phone running iOS 7 to mine and there was a huge difference in the ringtones & alerts.

So, now that I know it's not just my imagination - I have spent all day looking for other people having this same issue. I have found a few, but nobody has a solution. This is occurring on not only the iPhone 5 but also the iPhone 4 & 4s - but not to everyone. That would lead me to believe that there may be a hardware issue with my phone but here's the rub: It sounded loud, crisp & clear when I was using iOS 6.1.4. So a software issue? If so why wouldn't it be affecting everyone and not just a few of us? This is beyond baffling and frustrating...

Before I take this phone to Apple (thank goodness it is under warranty) I was wondering if anyone here has experienced this issue and FIXED IT. What I've tried so far is turning the volume down and up, turning up all volumes not just the ringer and restoring the phone to factory settings through iTunes. None of it worked (thus this post), therefore as I said if anyone has a solution to this prior to me making the several hour journey to the Apple store I would love to know what it is. Thank you in advance.

@cerrense

Did you read my opening post? "No sounds" is NOT the problem I and others here are experiencing. We are having issues with low ringtone volume after the upgrade to iOS 7.

If you're still having issues with your mail sound not updating try rebooting your phone. The next step would be to reset all settings on the device, and if that doesn't work, backup your data and restore the phone as new through itunes.

@Valentine2012

That option has already been explored and it appears as if most users with this issue already have sound check off. Thanks though.

@Bizio61

Already did that.

As a work-around you could try this:

Go to Settings>Sounds>Ringer and Alerts and turn OFF "Change with Buttons". Make the ringer high volume as well.

Now when playing music or videos, just use the volume buttons on the side to control it rather than the sliders. This means you can play the music as quietly or load as you want without turning down your ringers etc.

Hello! 🙂

I faced the exact problem so instead of using ringtones, i used songs (which were louder)

here r the steps:

step 1) go to iTunes pc > Click 'Edit '> Preferences > Tick the box beside 'Tones' > Click 'OK'

now u will be able to see 'Tones' along with music, movies etc.

step 2) Go to your 'Music' section

Select a song

right click the song title and click 'Create AAC Version'

*note: u can't put an entire song as it's too long so u will have select a specific part of that song*

After the AAC version is created, right click it and click 'Get Info' > Options> Select your 'Start Time' and the 'Stop Time' of the song > click 'OK'

Step 3) After clicking 'ok', right click on THAT SAME AAC version (which u selected the timings for) and click 'Create AAC Version' again and after that is done you will find the shortened version of the song u wanted

Delete the AAC Version which u created in Step 2

Go to the folder where the shortened AAC version is located (in case u cannot tell where the file is, right click > get info> summary and below u will find the file location)

rename the song from 'm4a' to 'm4r' (make sure the song is not being played while u rename the file)

it is preffered that u move the file to the 'Tones' section from iTunes Media folder

open that file with iTunes and u will see it is visible in the 'Tones' section (just like u see in the Music section)

sync the tone with ur Device

you can repeat this process with all the songs u want as ringtones 🙂

I hope this helped!!

I also have a 4S and a 4. They both have ringer and text low volume after IOS7 update. I was on the phone about an hour with Apple support, even done a new phone restore and they're both still low. They ended up telling me I would have to buy a new phone since I didn't have a warranty on the 4S that I paid $700 for two years ago. The only way I can get around this issue until they fix the problem was I downloaded new ringtones from a free app, put them on the phones via iTunes and they are louder than the ones on our phones. Go through the tones they offer to find the loudest ones and download them. Worked for the text tones too.. Hope this helps till they find a fix. Everyone needs to report to Apple using the link Bizio61 gives in this thread.

Same issue for me as well on my iPhone 4. It worked fine with the alerts on iOS 6XX and earlier. Nice clear and loud. The second I updated to the iOS 7 I noticed even when the volume is set at full volume now it's equal to about 3/4 or even 2/3 volume previously. Like everyone I have gone through all of the settings and re-installs and all of that multiple times with no luck.

I don't really care as much about missing calls or texts because I can still hear those (or catch them from the custom vibrations). But what concerns me the most as a deep sleeper is the fact that I use the alarm on the phone to wake me up in the mornings and now with it lower in volume I'm afraid I'll not hear it. It's almost happened a few times already. I hope they come up wit a fix for the volume levels. I can't afford to buy a new phone and hope I get lucky and have them back at the old volume levels again.

This is great for others but not for me. I've already created custom ringtones and alert tones in garage band many years ago that work OK and still play at proper volume. My issue is with the default alert tones not being loud enough. I use the "alarm" tone as my ALARM to wake up in the morning and I also like some of the default tones as text/alert tones. Plus the facebook and twitter notifications and other app notifications like it. Those are the ones that are now about 2/3 the volume as they used to be.

I guess I COULD take the alerts and throw them into something like Audacity and boost their volume level and import them back in as a custom tone and go that route if this won't get fixed but I'm running an old 32GB iPhone 4 and space is already so limited I had to remove all of my music from the phone so I'd hate to have to add more custom tones until this is fixed just so I can get the old volume alert levels I had in iOS 6.XX and previous.
