iPhone 5, iOS 7: Alert/Ringtone volumes low...

I updated my black 32gb iPhone 5 to iOS 7 last week and one of the very things I noticed was how many missed calls/texts I had. I couldn't understand why until I went to change my tones to something more attention grabbing.... I noticed that the volume of the alerts and ringtones, including the classics, are too low to be useful. At first I thought it was my imagination until I went to work and my coworkers IDENTICAL phone started ringing, and boy did it sound great. Clear, crisp, loud. I compared her phone running iOS 7 to mine and there was a huge difference in the ringtones & alerts.

So, now that I know it's not just my imagination - I have spent all day looking for other people having this same issue. I have found a few, but nobody has a solution. This is occurring on not only the iPhone 5 but also the iPhone 4 & 4s - but not to everyone. That would lead me to believe that there may be a hardware issue with my phone but here's the rub: It sounded loud, crisp & clear when I was using iOS 6.1.4. So a software issue? If so why wouldn't it be affecting everyone and not just a few of us? This is beyond baffling and frustrating...

Before I take this phone to Apple (thank goodness it is under warranty) I was wondering if anyone here has experienced this issue and FIXED IT. What I've tried so far is turning the volume down and up, turning up all volumes not just the ringer and restoring the phone to factory settings through iTunes. None of it worked (thus this post), therefore as I said if anyone has a solution to this prior to me making the several hour journey to the Apple store I would love to know what it is. Thank you in advance.

those do not work for everyone, this is a software related issue in the code itself, and with apple's track record of late will not be resolved anytime soon, and they certainly will not admit to any bugs in their latest IOS. ever since i've update to IOS 7 on my Iphone 4 i have had nothing but problems, first with the performance related issues and have followed all suggestions tips and tricks, which helped but my i phone now runs like my old i phone 3, and now this volume related issue. and of course apples only solution is to buy a new i phone........well that isn't going to happen for me, unfortunately as with the history of apple any time steve jobs left the company things went down the toilet, and with him passing away i feel that the innovation quality etc of apple died with him. and i am tried of having to constantly trying to tweak my phone to work etc. so as i said i don't foresee any apple products for me in the future, looks like i am going to be converting to the dark side of android.

Apple....you really need to step up your game and address these issues....especially the low ringtone volume which I am experiencing on my iPhone 5.

I've reset the phone, I've erased all content and settings on the phone , I've even returned the phone to the Apple store with no luck.

This is becoming REALLY frustrating....it's obviously a software issue....please fix it already.

We are in the minority with this, and it's clear that nobody really knows what the issue actually is so any hope of apple fixing this is just a pipe dream.

Some of you think that this is a software issue, and I did too at first. The problem is that I know several people with IDENTICAL phones all running the latest version of iOS 7 and those phones sound AMAZING compared to mine (which is also identical). This leads me to believe that the issue is HARDWARE related. Why would only some people be affected by a bug if we're all using the same identical copy of the software on the exact same device?

One thing I noticed is that whenever I turn the volume up on my phone, playing music or videos or games, the sound becomes distorted. This was an indication of a dying or blown speaker. Apple replaced the speaker but the problem persists, which indicates that another part of the phone is causing this issue. It's almost as if there is a blown amp driving the speaker. Sadly my phone is now out of warranty and I can't afford to buy another, so I'm stuck with this for another year.

Just on a side note - every apple device I've ever owned has had major issues. Apple really needs to get better QC people. For a company that puts such a high price premium on their products, the current QC people suck.

I understand your frustration but I find your comment hard to believe. We have had two iPads and about five iPhones over the last 5 years. We have never had a single issue with any of them. Once or twice a software glitch apeared and hard resets completely solved all issues. And considering Apple's customer ratings across the world, their QC is evidently one of the best in the world in any industry. Of course **** happens and someone is going to be unlucky. But that is statistically miniscule.

While I admit I was being a little too cynical, I have no reason to make this up. The Apple products I've owned:

2008 iMac 24" - repaired 3x due to screen problems, was never quite right.

iPod touch 2nd gen - replaced 2x, first because it just died and the 2nd time because it had dust behind the screen and major light leaks.

iPhone 5 - this thread.

MacBook Pro 2010 17": repaired 2x, bad hard drive and then a faulty screen.

Am I just unlucky? I don't know - but this is not a good track record for products I invested quite a bit of money in to. Obviously there are a few bad apples so to speak with any mass produced product and I accept that possibility when I hand over my credit card. But c'mon - every Apple product I've owned? Doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth.

I came here looking for an answer as this just happened to me today, which is odd because it was working fine intil now. As I was running through the list i pulled my bluetooth headset out of my pants pocket and discovered that it has inadvertently turned on, and the tones were going through that. No wonder I couldn't hear them. It's sometimes amazing the vast array of explanations there can be for the same apparent problem!

Same issue, brand new 5s 64gb. Mute switch on, ring tones checked, do not disturb not active, etc etc. Finally, double-clicked home button to bring up running apps and stopped each (swipe up). Then powered off in the normal fashion, powered back on and TA-DA! it's working again.

I've researched and fixed lots of problems for years with both Windows and iPhone using forum advice - and finally my first contribution. If this helps even one frustrated, fellow computer hater, my work here is done.

Have I mentioned that I hate computers?

Not quite on topic I know, but I use my iPhone for a pager and when I am in the garage and other places making noise, I often miss the notification. Note the pager is a text message, that just rings, then goes away. It is not a phone call that someone knows is unanswered. I am expected to take each pager call and expected to hear it. Turns out, if you plug your iPhone into an external speaker through the headphone plug, not the docking station connector, the ring tone is amplified! OK so maybe you all knew this, but I did not. So for example, on my push bike was always a time I missed the text tone, maxed out on loudness, and with vibration on, I could not hear it above the wind rushing through my helmet. Now no problem, wear one or two earphones and I can hear the ring tone, stop and take the pager. In my shed, plugged into an external speaker, I have no problem hearing it.

Problem solved for me.
