Why do I have extra songs in my iPhone playlist that are not on my iTunes library?

After doing the iOS7 update (and iOS7.0.2) I decided to add my music to my phone (I never had music on it before).

I discovered that there were 20 very random and obscure broadway songs that were on my iPhone in addition to the 60 songs I just synced. They had the iCloud icon by them, unlike the songs I had just added.

After doing research I found that the broadway songs were technically "purchased" on iTunes although they are not songs I would have ever purchased- in fact I have never once purchased anything on iTunes. This isn't my worry though, I am assuming it must have been some random free download I did at some point?

I went to settings > music > and turned show all music off. This did NOT work for all of them and only solved the problem 80%. There are still 4 of the random song on my iPhone. They DO NOT show up in my iTunes library on my computer and don't even exist on my computer.

With the other songs I can left swip and delete but these 4 songs won't! Why won't these four songs left swipe?

I am going crazy and have tried restarting my phone, restarting iTunes, re-syncing, turning off the iCloud. NOTHING WORKS.

Please help. I am a normally a very smart and tech-savvy person and I cannot for the life of me figure this out. I don't want to wipe everything- which as a solution is a pretty weak solution.

Why won't certain songs left swipe to delete off my phone when I am in the music app?

Why do I have extra songs on my phone that don't appear on iTunes on my computer?

Where did these songs come from and how do I get rid of them?

Much thanks!

I had the same problem. Tried restoring the phone multiple times, each time set the phone up a different way. So I called apple and the manager of apple care told me I was doing something wrong because he never have heard of this. He told me to turn off show all music and turn off iTunes Match and they were off! He kept saying It was my fault, but me majoring in I.T. I knew it was a glitch. Finally I decided to just disregard apple and try to get this fixed my self. Know what you have been waiting for is the answer to this fix. All you have to do is go to settings-iTunes and App Store and and from there sign out. Look for those songs that you can't deleted on the phone. They will be gone! Then sign back in and you won't have the problem again unless you do any rest(like "network rests" under settings) then you have to repeat the step. And if so some odd reason they download again just repeat. But don't worry you shouldn't run into that problem ever again! I'm hoping that apple will fix this glitch!

They will come back it is only a temeray fix untill apple fixes it. What I did was back up my iphone restored it, and restored it from a that back up after 7.1 came out. I haven't experianced any of the issues sense. But I'm not sure if the problem is still there. IF it is still in 7.1 this solustion is just a temperary fix but its better than nothing. I was just glad to find this descustion and find out I wansn't the only one having this problem.

Let me know if this works for you!

What helped in my case - in the end (without resetting the iPhone) was to log out of all Cloud services like Genius and Match. This removed the last copies. After a while I signed in again and the songs did luckily not come back (until now at least).

To be honest, when I connect the iPhone to iTunes, I will see some songs that were manually copied to the iPhone (and of course cannot be removed - ghosts), but they do not show up on the iPhone.

After finally finding the time to update my iTunes library and deleting all the old music I didn't like anymore, I tried to re-sync my old resurrected 4S and found I had the same sort of problem as most people here - songs were no longer in iTunes but still appearing on my phone, no matter what I did to delete them (I'm running iOS7).

I don't have iTunes Match, I don't have any music saved in the Cloud (that I know of..) and flicking off "Show All Music" did absolutely nothing. What happened to the good old 'uncheck on iTunes and resync' option that I used to use on the old iOS systems?!

I'd spent so long deleting individual songs on my Mac that there was no way I was going to manually swipe and delete 1000+ tracks on my phone again, and selecting/deselecting albums and artists on iTunes would just be taking a step backwards.

Eventually, I figured out a solution and it worked! That being said, this is a solution for items totally deleted from your library and not unselected iTunes playlists/songs/albums etc. still sitting there. I didn't want to go as far as restoring my phone and I wan't even going to venture into manual file deletion on the Mac.

The solution was actually ridiculously simple:

Settings > General > Usage >

  • under the STORAGE section, tap MUSIC
  • under ALL MUSIC, swipe left to DELETE
  • exit SETTINGS.

This will wipe your entire music library on your phone. Close the Music app and wait for a few minutes, then re-open it. "No Music" should now appear on the main screen.

Plug your phone in and under the MUSIC tab, select to sync "Entire Music Library". In the SUMMARY tab, only the "Automatically Sync When This iPhone Is Connected" box needs to be checked.

Hit APPLY and SYNC and there you go!

I can't guarantee this result for everyone, but it worked easily with me. No reboot or restore required.

Good luck 🙂

EDIT:

Also, if you really can't be bothered with all these steps and you mostly just have your music on shuffle anyway, simply select all the songs you want (majority or all of your library, whatever you wish), make a new playlist from those songs and resync your phone. Make sure the "Selected Playlists, Artists, Albums and Genres" box is checked (under the MUSIC tab when your phone is connected).

Same problem here although i dont think it has anything to do with purchased music. I have only purchased a couple of songs over the years with old ipods and there are hundreds of songs in my playlist. They do not exist on the phone but are streamed when i select them to listen to them. Many of them i have never heard of and certianly never purchased.

I have never sync'd my iphone with a computer either!

I think it started a few updates ago when apple started the "radio" option within music but i cant be sure since i never looked at the music feature on the phone prior to that then one day i looked and there were all these songs i had never heard of. I tried to fix it for a few minutes and then gave up until today.

My daughter sugested that i sync it and delete the songs manually or delete them onthe phone but that would have taken forever and i feel like i shouldnt have to waste my time doing that since i didnt put the songs there in the first place.

What did it for me was to sign out and sign back in again under Settings>Itunes &App Store

Just to be safe, i toggled "show all Music under Settings>Music

then i signed back in and NO MUSIC! nice.....Thanks!

So annoyed by these ridiculous updates. Does someone actually suggest this crap, or do they just assume everyone wants to relearn how to use their phone every month in order to delete this annoying crap? grrr! ANY WAY... Same thing happened to me: started noticing random songs playing when my phone was on shuffle- don't know how they got there because I did not have the Cloud or Show All Music on? :-/ When I tried to use the familiar swipe-delete option... NOTHING! 😟 ...Several days later after reviewing help forums for a solution, I finally find this one! 🙂- THANK YOU! -Signing out of iTunes from my phone and deleting / restoring the Cloud (also from phone settings)- did the trick, BUT NOTE: it also deleted a couple of songs I had manually dragged onto my phone from the library.(?) ... But at least for now, the songs are gone and my swipe/delete option seems to be working again:)

PS

dear apple,

what happened? You guys are missing the mark! Stick to user friendly devices/software and if you have an itch to upgrade something, how about adding more pixels and better zoom, etc. to the camera/video, or a multi tasting feature?....-falling a little short in those areas in comparison.

Why do I have extra songs in my iPhone playlist that are not on my iTunes library?
