Apple Forced iOS7 update on my iPad2 !

Apple has forced the iOS7 update file onto my iPAD2 and this update is sitting in the "other" folder indicated by the yellow bar in iTunes. I never wanted to upgrade - how do I get rid of this 2.3 GB file that has eaten away my iPAD capacity? This is very frustrating as I had spent a lot of time cleaning my iPAD to free up some space and now this !

I just checked my iPad 2 and don't have enough space thankfully, it needs2.9 GB,

I have good wifi on it, and need to do another clean out to install a movie to watch thru my tv home theatre that doesn't have Apple TV. I can't connect my Ipad with the lightning cord. It has the older USB.

I'm scared by that photo on CNET!!

Looks exactly how it does when installing.

If this starts installing on devices.

It's a complete outrage!!'

I'm starting to want the first Ipad that can't support this lol

How nice one of those would be

I guess I still have my iPod to use, but that's small.

So if it gets on our devices will it actually install??

If there is enough storage space on the device (theoretically 3.1GB but I've found that to be more like ~2.5GB) and the device is connected to Wi-Fi and externally powered, you *may* get the auto-pushed download (I don't know Apple's criteria for what devices will get it...only my mini got it while my iPad 3 & iPad 4 did not). The update needs ~3.1 GB to extract & install. And please note...even though it's downloaded and ready to install, YOU have to push the Install button to initiate it. Otherwise, it sits on your device, using up that storage space with no way to remove it, other than actually installing it to get rid of it...or other means as I already posted.

I got it pushed to my iPad Mini but I haven't installed it. I immediately turned off the wireless in my iPad 2 and new iPod Touch 5. Scared to connect with those. But are you all saying it only downloads IF you are plugged into external power? So I can go online and then when my battery gets low turn off the wifi while I charge it and it won't d/l the update?

As I mentioned above, I don't know Apple's criteria on which devices get it pushed to and which devices don't. The ONLY time it will download (if it even does) is:

1. When the device is externally powered (plugged into the wall charger or a PC)

2. Has a valid Wi-Fi Internet connection (don't know if it will download using cellular data)

3. Has enough space on the device to hold the download and have working/decompressing space of ~2.5GB

One it's downloaded and on the device, it cannot be removed except by:

1. Installing the actual update

2. Restoring the device as new (from the device itself) and thwarting the download before it begins.

Specifically Step #2:

Go to Settings > General > Software Update. iOS will automatically check for available updates. Available updates download automatically if your device is connected to Wi-Fi and a power source. (Bolding mine)

I'm pretty certain that's how I got jammed with it. Charging overnight at home with the home network active.

The worst part is that there is no "setting" anywhere (contrary to what some people may believe) that enables or disables this "feature". If anyone knows where this "setting" is, please share it with all of us...I'd love to know where it is.

Hi guys!

Same situation here with my iPhone 4 on 6.1.3 : I had the message DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL in the settings/general/software update tab since IOS7 became available. Yesterday night, I plugged my iPhone in my iMac and I noticed later that it was missing about 2.5 GB of space. Found that the other space was the culprit and when I opened the software update tab, the message had changed to INSTALL only. What a mess..

Clearly, with a wifi connection and sufficient power, IOS7 is becoming self-aware.. 🙂

Joke aside, I was able to erase the download file by resetting the iPhone to factory settings (erase all settings and contents). After general reset, it shows a free space of 13.7 GB on a 16 GB model (as expected) and the message in Software update return to DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL.

When I replug it on the iMac, it tries again to initiate the download of the IOS7 big file (around 700MB). To prevent that, I unplug the iphone and put it in airplane mode. An interesting thing happened in the Software Update tab : IOS7 download just stop and a new button appears, saying RESUME DOWNLOAD.

So, I just carefully avoid to push this button and, since yesterday, it appears to stay indefinitely in a "waiting to resume downloading IOS7" state.

I've check free space on the iPhone and nothing appears to have been downloaded so far, even if I'm currently on wifi.

The last thing I need to investigate is if the RESUME DOWNLOAD will stay that way even if I plug the iPhone on my iMac for sync, but I don't have time now for that..
