If you go to General->Software Update...you will most likely see a "1" displayed there.

If you press Software Update - you will see a brief description of iOS 7.02 and then a big panel that says "Install Now".

If it says "Install Now" - your iPad has already downloaded this thing - WITHOUT your knowledge.

However - the panel could also say "Download and Install"...which means you have not made any manual moves to get it - yet.

In my case - with an iPad 2 - I knew this update was going to be a disaster well before it was released and vowed to ensure it would never get on my device until I was darned good and ready to try it.

But alas - Apple has already wasted my space without even telling me. And now I cannot get rid of it either.

I found a solution from a Chinese website called WeIphone (http://www.weiphone.com/)

Here is the original Chinese version if you are interested: http://bbs.weiphone.com/read-htm-tid-7022768.html

Now I will try to retell the solution for those who prefers English:

Notice: This guide is for those who still have iOS 6 running on their devices and only want to delete the update file for iOS 7 automatically downloaded. For those who have already updated their devices to iOS 7 and want to downgrade to iOS 6, this guide will probably be useless.

Part 1. How to prevent iOS 7 from being downloaded automatically:

If your device has already downloaded iOS 7 automatically, please skip this part and read part 2.

Method A: Keep free space on your iPad / iPhone below 3.1GB all the time. You can do this by installing some large games or keep some music / films.

Method B:With your device unplugged from power, connect to WIFI and open Settings->General->Software Update. Now your device will try to find whether there is new update or not. After a few minutes, there will be a notice of new update (currently is iOS 7.0.2) and a button says "Download and Install". DO NOT press it. Now you can use your device as usual. As long as you check the update manually, it won't download it automatically. It's wired, but it works.

Part 2. Delete iOS 7 firmware downloaded automatically:

Method A: If you have backup in iTunes, recover it. (I didn't test this method, so it's on your own risk.)

Method B: Open Settings->General->Software Update, Click "Install Now". There will be a prompt says "Verifying update...", Wait until this prompt disappear, there will be a spinning wheel on the black background. Immediately press and hold both of the power and home buttons at the same time. DO NOT release the power and home buttons for about 10 seconds. Your device will reboot. It's done. The automatically downloaded firmware will have been deleted. Now read part 1 to prevent automatically downloading in the future.

My new iPad (the 3rd generation, 16GB WIFI version) is running iOS 6.1.3 and automatically downloaded iOS 7.0.2, I tried Method B to delete it and succeed. However this is not an official method so there is no guarantee it will work for everyone, please use it at your own risk.

They automatically download the huge IOS7 file to my two Iphones and my Ipad despite that fact that I had auto updates turned off and said no every single time Itunes asked me if I wanted to download and update to IOS7. The ONLY option now available was "Install"

Then they remove any settings that may allow users to stop the download happening.

I was going to wait a bit until a few more of the bugs were fixed before upgrading but having 3GB of my personal storage space forcibly ripped off my devices and obviously against my will (after all I had said no to the updates in Itunes) made me just a bit peeved.

Good skills Apple, if users don't conform you simply force them to or at least penalize them by taking a huge chunk of the disk space they paid for off them.

Personally its just an os (albeit one that looks like it was designed by my 5 year old with her crayons) but there is a principle involved.

Fixed:

I followed the lead nzzzzz posted and got it off my phone.

- I filled all the empty space on the phone with duplicate music tracks via Itunes.

The "Install" button then disappeared replaced with a notice saying it had been downloaded but could not be installed because it needs more space.

- Shut down my wifi, turned off mobile data and disconnected the sync cable

- Did a soft reset (power + home) which got rid of the file and gave me almost 3gb of space back

- Took a series of 5 min videos to fill all that space

- Turned wifi and mobile data back on and synced with Itunes

The "downloaded' label is now gone and instead it tells me there is an update available and tells me I need to clear space so it can be downloaded but at least I now own the space that had been stolen.

- Via Itunes I deleted one of the 5 minute videos at a time and replaced them each time with small play list of duplicate music or photos from my PC

Now have about a GB of working space on my phone which is too small for the IOS7 download and as I use it I just delete a few of the photos or songs I filled it with.

We shouldn't have to do this but when faced with such arrogance people tend to push back eventually.
