How to change color of text bubble

Ick, every message I send has a hideous green background. I should like a soft purple. How can I change this?

I guess I don't mind the gray of my correspondent, but that green is barfy.

I soooo agree. The neon green text bubble is awful on the eyes. I am prone to migraines and I can't look at that color without it triggering a headache. Did circus clowns on crack decide on that color? It's simply awful.

Come to think of it, the whole IOS7 is simply awful. What a disappointment.

To turn ON SMS: Settings > Messages > Send as SMS

That setting does NOT enable SMS. All it does is tell the phone that, in the event an iMessage can't be sent as an iMessage, it should be sent as an SMS. If SMS is not already enabled through the carrier, it won't have any effect. It also won't have any effect if iMessage is turned off. Likewise, turning it off will not turn off SMS.

Signing out of iMessage should cause all messages to go as SMS. However, there are sometimes issues sending SMS messages to people to whom one has sent iMessages in the past. Sometimes, it's necessary to remove the conversation thread with that person.
