iPhone 5S bad quality screen compared to iPhone 5

I'll get straight to the point.


My first iPhone 5S (32GB, space gray, Sprint) from launch day had a noticeably flawed screen. Coming from an iPhone 5, I know what a good quality screen looks like. And this wasn't it.


There was a faint gray "grid" around the pixels covering the entire phone. It's almost impossible to see at a passing glance, but once you see it and realize what it is, it will NEVER go away. You can't unsee something. It will be there every time you look at it. The best way to describe it is looking at your porch through a screen door. You're still looking at the porch, but there's clearly a screen door between you and the porch.


I found this completely unacceptable. It made the phone look like a cheap aftermarket knockoff, and not what I expect from Apple's widely praised Retina Display.


I immediately searched the web for answers and came across this thread on reddit full of people having the same issue. I now know I'm not alone.

I get a replacement device that ALSO has the exact same issue. Everyone at Sprint/Apple I show it to tells me I'm crazy and they can't help me. They "don't see anything". Bull.


I pulled out my camera and got a picture of what I'm talking about. You can clearly see the icon on the right from an iPhone 5 has PERFECT pixel density. Everything is lined up just as it should to form a clear and beautiful image.


The one on the left, my iPhone 5S (and many others apparently) has ugly dark streaks running vertical through the image.

This is not an isolated issue and we need to get this image out there so Apple knows about the problem (if they don't already).


I can provide more pictures from both devices as well as an iPad 4 if necessary.

Good day... i just saw the pictures of the two icons you posted but its clearly the result of zooming the small icon & ofcourse you can see the pixels if you zoom in any kind of image no matter how high are pixels if you are zooming them it will act like a microscope then 100% sure you will notice the pixels of an image... you have to be thankfull that you have a verry sharp vision of almost like a microscope... because i owned 5s right now & no matter how i looked at the screen & icons its still nice & crisp with no flaws in it... i even turned my screen into tge brightest still no single pixels or yellow lines that you are imagining... not to mention that i bought my iphone 5s refurbished condition it looks like bnew bit it it already used or 2ndhand... iphones all has the best screen display on earth even if samsung that has super amoled hd display but the iphone has different quality & very high standard on every model they are making... the only thing that i do not like on iphones are no expandable memory.. but all aspects exept the no expandable memory are almost perfect..

That's because you didn't click on the picture like I said to -__-


Click on it, and then you will see the picture on the right has perfectly uniform pixel structure without a single obstruction whatsoever. The picture on the left has ugly dark streaks running vertical through the display for no reason at all other than they used a cheaper display.


The brightness on the 5 was turned down a bit, but that's all. Do you want me to retake them all including the iPad 4 screen at a higher brightness?


If you think there's something wrong with the picture on the right (after clicking on it, like I said), then you don't know what screens are supposed to look like.

I have the same issue on my 5s. It looks like the interlace on an old CRT screen.


I went to an Apple store yesterday and none of the 7 or 8 display models I looked at had the issue. So I think I'm going to try to have it swapped out. Unfortunately, some people don't have the same eye for this kind of thing, so it might not be easy to convince someone there's actually a problem.

i see more streaks on the 5 you pictured than the 5s. apple changes display manufacturers every now and then and has different supply chains depending on the model of iPhone 5s you have and depending on the factory yours was manufactured in. if you are honestly bothered by something you needed a macro image of to show the problem, try holding your phone farther from your face. you'll damage your eyes if you don't. apple doesn't guarantee you'll be able to hold your phone an inch from your face and not be able to see individual pixels. i also have an iphone 5s and i only see those streaks when i take a picture of the screen and blow it up. that effect is caused by the fact that the pixels of the screen and the pixels of the image sensor don't go well together

No offense, but are you serious?


There's absolutely no streaks or interlacing on the 5 picture at all.


Like, even if you zoomed in all the way and TRIED to look for them, they simply aren't there.


There's a perfectly unobstructed uniform pixel grid. That's it.


What are you seeing? Can you highlight the "streaks" you claim to see in photoshop or paint for me? Thanks.

I'm on my 3rd device. I can't keep swapping out at my Sprint store when they barely have any to begin with.


I'm awaiting a replacement from AppleCare which takes over a week and I live 4 hours from the nearest Apple store.

Suspicious? Are you kidding me? I was simply letting people know of this issue because I've experienced it on 3 devices now and have seen it on many others.

I'm sorry I slighted the almight Apple in your eyes, kind sir.

My first 5s had a PERFECT Screen. Perfect color accuracy and no interlaced lines shown in the image. I got that phone replaced however because the camera module was rattling much more than it should and in fact felt loose in the phone casing to the point where a vibrating notification would set off a rattlesnake like rattle.


During the replacement process it's impossible to detect whether or not the display on the replacement units have the interlacing issue because the iOS 7 setup screens are completely white. After activating the device the Apple Genius has to process the replacement as a "Point of Sale" and your warranty is then transferred to that device. By that time it was too late for me to go back to my perfect display despite the rattle since that device was no longer "mine". I sat there at the genius bar for a good 40 minutes trying to show the genius exactly what the issue was with the new phone, and she just couldn't see it. Eventually I was able to get a flickering image up, which convinced the manager to let me go through another replacement. Alas this replacement also has the issue. In fact while looking at the display models in the store, about 3/4 devices had the issue, even the iPhone 5c.


I am going back to another apple store in my area next week to see if I can actually get a genius to see the issue and provide a replacement that doesn't have this issue.


I do believe however, when I was comparing my old perfect screen to the new flawed one, the perfect screen had really good calibration for the whites. The replacement had a distinctly warm feeling. If you're going in for replacement for this issue, open up a pure while image and compare it to the activation screen of the replacement. If the replacement has a noticeably cooler display but is not blue tinged then that panel probably does not have the interlacing issue that so many of us are experiencing.

So I have the exact same issue with my Verizon Space Gray 32GB 5S. I am really happy that someone has finally captured this problem in a photograph.


I went in today to get it replaced or exchanged, they told me that this would require a genius replacement. So I went ahead and did that. The replacement uint they brought out had the exact same issue but it was a bit more subtle. So I showed it to the apple employee, at this point he claimed that all the devices in the store had the problem and basically told me tough luck. He even went so far as to say my only option would be to "sell it on ebay". They called the problem a "spec" problem, whatever that means.

Going in for a replacement at at different apple store on monday. I made a variety of test images with one pixel wide horizontal lines in order to show a contrast between the vertical "scan" lines that are present mostly on blues and greys. I'm also going to bring a magnifying glass for the genius to use so that they can see the issue clearly.


Now only if I could prove to them that I in fact have 20/15 vision, meaning that I can see this issue much more clearly than an "average" person would.
