iPhone 5S bad quality screen compared to iPhone 5

I'll get straight to the point.

My first iPhone 5S (32GB, space gray, Sprint) from launch day had a noticeably flawed screen. Coming from an iPhone 5, I know what a good quality screen looks like. And this wasn't it.

There was a faint gray "grid" around the pixels covering the entire phone. It's almost impossible to see at a passing glance, but once you see it and realize what it is, it will NEVER go away. You can't unsee something. It will be there every time you look at it. The best way to describe it is looking at your porch through a screen door. You're still looking at the porch, but there's clearly a screen door between you and the porch.

I found this completely unacceptable. It made the phone look like a cheap aftermarket knockoff, and not what I expect from Apple's widely praised Retina Display.

I immediately searched the web for answers and came across this thread on reddit full of people having the same issue. I now know I'm not alone.

I get a replacement device that ALSO has the exact same issue. Everyone at Sprint/Apple I show it to tells me I'm crazy and they can't help me. They "don't see anything". Bull.

I pulled out my camera and got a picture of what I'm talking about. You can clearly see the icon on the right from an iPhone 5 has PERFECT pixel density. Everything is lined up just as it should to form a clear and beautiful image.

The one on the left, my iPhone 5S (and many others apparently) has ugly dark streaks running vertical through the image.

This is not an isolated issue and we need to get this image out there so Apple knows about the problem (if they don't already).

I can provide more pictures from both devices as well as an iPad 4 if necessary.

Hi there,

I know your post is getting old, but I want to share and confirm that the issue is not resolved yet.

We distribute Apple iPhones to all management employees at our company and I have come across this issue on almost all iPhone 5S models. I actually have four iPhone 5S right in front of me now.

Every single one has the bad display with lines from top to bottom.

Of course, not everyone sees this, as most people dont care for details and just read Mails on the iPhone.

I am very sensitive to these kinds of issues and notice almost every flaw in electronic products.

Back to the point: Every iPhone 5s I have here has this issue. My iPhone 5 does not. The 5 has a perfect display - but I must mention my iPhone 5 was also replaced 3 times before I received a model with a good screen.

Not to mention the touchscreen-issue the other two also had.

I'm not going to start bashing Apple here as the forum rules are extremely strict.

However, I will say that most people with iPhone 5S most definately have the flawed screen.

They either don't care or don't notice. I am going to try and replace my iPhone 5s exactly 3 times.

If the phones I receive all have the faulty screen, my son can have the 5S to play with and I will keep my 5.

Screens like this do not belong in high-end products. More likely in toys for kids. A big shame.

I am exactly the same way with electronics so I have a very similar perspective on devices that I pay top dollar for. I find it unacceptible that the newest, latest, best phone they make has issues with its display. To date, I have purchased 3 5s's and exchanged all of them as they have all had the problem. I have looked at approximately 15 - 20 new phones from Apple at the store, and only one of them did not display the problem (phones they were bringing out to exchange with my phone). I gave the one good copy to my mother, and currently am still going through the process with Apple. So long story short, the problem still exists, there is no way I am unlucky enough to just come across a bad batch of these phones, and the fact that they refuse to acknowledge that this is an issue (mostly just saying that it is to specification and within tolerances, before they exchange it) seems a little disappointing. I still have my old iphone 4, with its perfect screen, I plan on using that the next time I have to demonstrate the problem to the apple store.

Needless to say, I am incredibly frustrated that they are incapable of finding a device that does not display the problem.

Hey there, I'm back with an update..

My first Black 16GB 5S had a bad screen and 2 weeks later the hardware was rendered useless as I kept getting Blue Screens and reboots.

(Yet another issue plaguing many iPhone 5s users...)

The replacement phone had a slightly better screen, but still had the interlacing stripes at full brightness.

Now I have a white 16GB 5s and it has some of the worst interlacing stripes I have seen.

I have actually never seen a 5s with a good screen. I have yet to believe they exist..

Next time I'm close to an Apple Store I might try another exchange. But for now, I have had it.

Serial Numbers where all completely different by the way. F1... F2... DK..

Good luck and let us know if you found another one! Also, would like to know what the first 3 characters of your mom's iPhone 5s Serial Number are..

I have seen about six that do not have the issue, I have looked in many stores and found that my mothers (F2 serial), my uncles, and a couple in the stores have no vertical lines, however, I have seen far more with the issue than without. That said, I did get somewhere with Apple tech support, but it was a bit of good news bad news. They recognized that there are screens with vertical lines that are visible. However, they said that it is technically within tolerance and is therefore not a defect. The tech support representative stated that they would be happy to replace it with one that did not have the problem, but that they were not going to endlessly exchange them until I found one. So therein lies the catch, they have no way to find out which manufacturer made the displays that do or do not have the problem, or a method to seek out one that does not have it. So I am SOL or, put another way, up a certain creek without a paddle.

While I consider it unacceptable that the new screen is worse than the old screen (iphone 4, 4s, and 5) they are willing to stand behind it and say everything is technically working. It is just disappointing that a company that usually prides itself on being a cut above the competition is letting their displays slide, especially when displays for the SGS5 and HTC One are critically acclaimed for their resolution, responsiveness, size and quality. I will most likely be ditching this phone as soon as something truly compelling hits the market in the next six months, for now I guess I have to deal with the display.

As I said to the tech support rep, I cannot possibly be the least lucky person on earth and be handed all these defective devices.

Side note, at the store I also saw a couple iPad Mini Retinas with the same issue. They should be double checking their supply chain at this point, I would be livid if my ipad had this issue.
