I just used Software update to install 10.4.7. All went fine until the restart. Now all I have gotten for about an hour is the beautiful gray Apple. Nothing happens. What next?
hi,
there are two update packages. one is the for updates 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 and the other one updates any version 10.4.x to 10.4.7, and called the combo update. that explains the difeerence in the sizes of the update packages.
After being out of the country for almost 1 month, this morning, when I turned on my PowerPC Dual 2.5 G5 it said I needed to install 10.4.7 update. I needed to do a few things, so I used the machine for about 2 hours and then decided to take the update. Machine was working just fine.
THe installation did not complete, indicating it could not expand the package and I had to reboot. Now all I get is a grey screen with a black rectangle in the middle with the looping ring icon, end of story. I tried doing command option PR during boot but that did not help.
I tried booting in safe mode, nothing. Tried C to reinstall TIger from CD, nothing. It just won't boot. Prior to the update, it was working just fine.
ANy recommendations, or do I need to take it to the Apple Store. I am 20 days past my 1 yr purchase date.
Will apple fix this if their update created the damage?
My PM G5 1.8DP seemed to work fine...until I (tried to) put it to sleep. It won't go to sleep at all - the computer freezes and then the fans go full blast until the computer is forcefully shut down. It his done this
every time I have tried to put it to sleep since the update.
I have never had a problem with any of the OS X updates...but this one is troublesome. Has anyone else out there had sleep issues with this update? Any suggestions? I'm extremely hesitant to update any of the other Macs I have.
encountered the same issues as everyone else.I watched and waited for about an hour, rebooting every 15 mins. or so-finally contacted a great support guy at Small Dog who had me do a safe restart. Will now try the repairs suggested by others on this forum. Thanks
Several users have mentioned Safe Mode and fsck, FWIW Apple Support Article 106214 says : ... If you're using Mac OS X 10.2 or later, you can start up your computer in Safe Mode, which includes an automatic disk check and repair. ..."
My problems seem to be sleep and firewire related. See
"DISCUSTED WITH THE APPLE SLEEP/WAKE CHAOS"
elsewhere in these forums.
Note that everything worked very happily with 10.4.6 till before the 10.4.7 update. Wish I knew a painless way to get 10.4.6 back.
The TiBook works fine in 10.4.7 with no external firewire drives attached. I did the installation with them attached & got old problems back. Then disconnected them, dounloaded the 100+ MB 10.4.7 combo update for G4s and installed using that. Still no joy.
Naturally I did disk utilitie repairs & checks many times through the many reboots into safe, etc. at every step prior to, during & after the installation.
When waking from sleep the screen lights, the external mouse dies and the track pad responds, all the while the clock is stopped ticking the seconds.
With firewire drives plugged in & turned on everything is back to "DISCUSTED WITH THE APPLE SLEEP/WAKE CHAOS"
hi i have an intel imac 20" 2gb ram downloaded and installed the updates.
all i get after leaving it for over an hour is the starting osx screen with a full blue animated bar.
same thing with safe boot

Problem there... My Mini only came with restore disks. If I boot from disk 1, I only have the option of installing everything fresh. It's not a classic boot disk...
I don't suppose there's some trick to making one?
It seems that the -10810 error and a host of other errors, such as various applications not launching and getting a "too many processes" type of error are all caused by an smbd process overrun.

I have tried Software Update to update to 10.4.7 at least 4 times for a DP G4. It won't install and gives a message, "The digital signature for this pachage is incorrect. The package may have been tamperted with or corrupted since being signed by "Apple". I can't get the iPhoto update to install either. What is going on???
Do you have a password on your user account? If not, apply one and run software update again. It would appear that since 10.4, you need to have a password in order for software update to do it's thing.
I am the only user. the account has a password and when using Software Update, I am asked to provide it. Still, to no avail. but with all the trouble with 10.4.7 I am reading about, I may pass on this one and wait for the new system.
Have you tried a permissions repair? Software Update does a SHA-1 check to insure it is the real thing. Short of some sort of spoof of the Apple server, it seems most likely that Software Update itself isn't working correctly, which might be because of permissions issues.
