iPhone 5s 'This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably...' help?

What is happening here?

I keep getting this stupid message even when no charger is plugged in!

I'm using the official charger that came with the iphone 5s box. I have other lightning connectors and thought maybe switching them would fix it but it hasn't.

Is there something wrong with my 5s? Do I need to clean the port on the bottom of the phone? I've only had the 5s for about a week. I am using official apple chargers.

This started happening after my batter drained and I put the phone on charge. Is it a software bug?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.s. The message ONLY appears when it is not on charge. Which is studpily weird.

Hey guys the issue you all going through is that the cable you have isn't MFI certified or it has been damaged therefore the iPhone/iPad/iPod doesn't see it as a certified Apple cable. I suggest you buy a new one but ask the salesperson if the cable is MFI certified. If the salesperson says yes make sure that it charges before you leave that store. Worked for me. Have a good one :-)

Try this:

  1. Plug the USB cable to the wall-charger
  2. Turn off the iPhone and when you see the loading wheel spinning, plug the charger in the iPhone
  3. Let the iPhone be connected to the charger for a while. Don’t switch it on
  4. After about 15 minutes, turn it on your iPhone. Dismiss the warnings
  5. The charging should mostly continue without a problem.

Method 2:

  1. Plug in USB power
to wall-charger
  2. Then connect USB cable to iPhone
  3.
Dismiss any warnings
  4. Unlock your iPhone so you get to the “Home Screen”
  5. Dismiss any remaining warnings
  6. Unplug the fake “Knock Off” USB cable
  7. Followed by plugging it back in.
  8. Dismiss warning again
  9. It should now charge.

Useless link. I can only read it if I "like" the page, and I don't.

But the answer is that only Apple manufactured or Apple Certified cables will work. So the solution is to get an Apple cable or one that has been tested by Apple to be compatible. There are several manufacturers that make compatible, certified cables. It's important, because it isn't just a cable; there are 3 microcircuits in the Lightning connector at the end of the cable. There are a couple of reasons Apple enforces this:

  • There have been instances where non-certified cables have damaged or destroyed the electronics in the phone
  • There is one case of someone who was electrocuted and died from using a non-certified cable and counterfeit wall adapter
  • The technology is patented, and to keep a patent you must enforce it

If you get this message and you ARE using an Apple or Certified cable it usually means that there is dirt in the connector on the bottom of the phone that is preventing the plug from seating properly.

I have need of a cable with the old iPad connector, the lightening connector and a connector for a Blackberry. I travel quite frequently and I usually have one cable that travels with me so I can charge either one. I don't want to carry three cables with me. I do have 4 Apple cables and one of the really long ones. I guess I understand why Apple would not make a charger for Blackberry, but I am forced to use it for work so I need a solution. And, yes, I have already considered just having 3 cables at work, 3 in the car, 3 at home, and 3 for my travel bag. That is just not going to work. Just having one set that goes everywhere with me is not going to work either - I am just that forgetful. I am considering purchasing a new iPad so the need for the old connector may disappear in the future. Has anyone found something that works? Thank you in advance for any assistance or advice you can offer. Dee

Hi Lawrence,

Thank you for responding. I should have included in my post that I do indeed have the same problem. This is why i was surfing Apple Support - all of my non-Apple cords are now not working. My phone will not charge using any of them or sync. I tried the earlier fix posted by LinusTechTips and it did not work. I assumed from reading the thread that there was really no fix and I would need to purchase new cords. Hence, I was wondering if my solution was a Apple cord that would provide for all my needs? Or is there a company that makes a product that still works? I suspect from your response that there is not one. That makes me really sad.

Hi there Lawrence.. I've gotten the same message as well however I've only had apple cables.. the original one

that came with my iPhone 5s as well as the one that came with my iPad mini from last year. The one from my iPad has worked beautifully until a couple of days ago when it completely stopped working on both the iPad and the 5s. I stopped using the cable from the iPhone cause of the error message everyone here is talking about even though its the original cable that came with the phone. It won't work with my iPad mini either.. i'm not sure what to do.. I have seem some people talk about completely taking off all the old data and rebooting it.. I will say that the 5s cable did work for a short time in between this last IOS update and the one before.. i'm thinking its a software glitch.. any recommendations??

Thanks so much!

Laurie

This error is never a software problem; it is hardware in the cable or the device.

Lightning cables have 3 microcircuits in the Lightning plug; they can be damaged by pulling the plug out of the device by the cable rather than the connector, and also by using lower quality USB power adapters that do not filter spikes (such as many car adapters). If the device is still in warranty the cable is covered by that warranty unless it has visible damage.

Another really common cause of this problem is dirt in the connector on the bottom of the phone. It doesn't take much cruft in the connector to interfere with a proper connection, so inspect the connector carefully with a magnifying glass and a bright light. It must be spotlessly clean for the connection to work properly.
