iPhone 5s 'This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably...' help?

What is happening here?

I keep getting this stupid message even when no charger is plugged in!

I'm using the official charger that came with the iphone 5s box. I have other lightning connectors and thought maybe switching them would fix it but it hasn't.

Is there something wrong with my 5s? Do I need to clean the port on the bottom of the phone? I've only had the 5s for about a week. I am using official apple chargers.

This started happening after my batter drained and I put the phone on charge. Is it a software bug?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.s. The message ONLY appears when it is not on charge. Which is studpily weird.

Wow, you jumped in with both feet, responded to an almost 3 year old post that has nothing to do with your problem, and didn't bother to read the thread.

If you had you would have learned that either:

  • The cable had failed - try a different one (it's got 3 microcircuits in it, so it's not impossible that there was a failure)
  • There's dirt in the Lightning connector that is preventing good contact - clean it with pressurized air or a toothpick
  • There's a hardware failure in the phone.

You state the problem is due to 1 of 3 reasons:,

  • The cable had failed - try a different one (it's got 3 microcircuits in it, so it's not impossible that there was a failure)
  • There's dirt in the Lightning connector that is preventing good contact - clean it with pressurized air or a toothpick
  • There's a hardware failure in the phone.

however this is not the case. I suddenly(this morning) have the issue with both my IPod (3years old) & my IPad Air 2 (8 months old).I am using the cables that came with them from Apple. Both cables suddenly failed? I doubt it. Both devices hardware failed the same morning? Again, I doubt it.I Tried turning the devices off &then on; I did the latest update hoping this would fix the bug; I cleaned the connections. I tried to switch cables between devices. Still getting same message & soon will have no charge to battery.

To Gail from Maine-None of the advice helped, so it would be nice if you did not post an answer like yours Feb 15. If it irritates you to reply to those of us that are not technology minded, then just refrain from replying. No one is forcing you to reply.

Have you tried a different USB power source?

As a matter of fact, I DID read through all that, and nothing helped. Neither did your ineffectual and snarky reply. I agree, if you don't want to help, don't reply. You would have no idea whether or not I read through it all . So in regards to your better things to do,, you can find them. You obviously have no intention of being a help and just want to feel like you are superior. Just so you know, I did find a fix. Not what you suggested either. So in the same vein, we also have better things to do than to get that kind of support on a support page. Next time, don't waste your precious time "helping" Thanks

In reponse to the people who's cable isn't charging your iphone anymore, I've found out if I switch the iphone off and charge it whilst it's off this seems to work. Also with the charger plugged into the wall but not the phone, if you switch the phone off, as the little disc starts to spin, plug in the cable, leave it off for ten minutes and then switch it back on you can charge it whilst it's awake. Not ideal, but I ain;t forking out for another cable so this will have to do!

My iPhone 6S was doing this. I got an error message about a cord several times one night even though it was not plugged into anything. When I went to charge the phone that night it would not charge. I have never used a cord for this phone besides the one that came in the box. The only way that I could get the phone working was by using a different cord to connect to my computer. From there I was able to get it working after connecting to iTunes. It did take a few minutes to register the phone. I am updating my phone now in hope that this will fix the problem.
