iPhone 5s 'This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably...' help?

What is happening here?

I keep getting this stupid message even when no charger is plugged in!

I'm using the official charger that came with the iphone 5s box. I have other lightning connectors and thought maybe switching them would fix it but it hasn't.

Is there something wrong with my 5s? Do I need to clean the port on the bottom of the phone? I've only had the 5s for about a week. I am using official apple chargers.

This started happening after my batter drained and I put the phone on charge. Is it a software bug?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.s. The message ONLY appears when it is not on charge. Which is studpily weird.

Everything comes down to the software people!

This is really simple. The software update that apple are using to "verify" if you are using the correct chargers its obviously glitchy to say the least.

This is affecting a wide range of people all doing very differnt things to create and replicate, some with charger cables and some without. iOS7 appears to be the common link here.

Obviously this is some teathing issues with the new 7.0.3 update. i'm sure apple will sort this out soon.

I wonder why there is nobody from Apple on this forum to join discussion and explain if Apple will fix the IOS 7.0.3 bug on charging or not.

These are genuine cable issues as well, not only knockoffs.

My patience is running and I'm willing to start promoting Samsung over Apple products to all my big pharma customers, who I previously advised to rollout IPads and IPhones.

Perhaps swinging 150,000 users away from Apple will do the magic of them joining in on this discussion.

Many people do not have time to go back to the store and get replacement. So, if it is broken, I throw it away and get another brand.

Is there anybody from Apple reading this and what is the Apple comment about it?

Thanks.

Actually I have a sneaky feeling this may be simpler than we all realise ...

Yesterday I noticed that the connector on my charger lead was quite dirty, so I cleaned it with some alcohol and then thought "Ohhh.... if there's dirt in that socket, or some piece of mildly conductive junk, then it may be fooling the phone into thinking that something weird is actually plugged into it, even when nothing is".

So i used a compressed air can to blow everything out of the socket, and guess what? The messages have completely stopped appearing!

It's worth a try folks!

@WWCA No I wouldn't considering a post above yours from Cinnie84 is getting the message and the phone isn't plugged into anything? Also I have a friend having the same issue as we speak. We are sitting at work and the message keeps popping up and the phone hasn't been plugged in all day. Also if you have 3rd party cables that work with your 5s, but not with your wife's 5c what exactly is intentional? That would point to the phone itself, not the cable? Unless I am misunderstanding what you are trying to say?

I have an iPhone 5 runing 7.0.3 and haven't had this issue. I have one non apple charger, yet my friend that is having the issue ( Also iPhone 5 ) only has apple made cables.

People are right about expecting to pay more for Apple products. You knew it coming in that you would have to pay more. Is $20 a real big deal to get an extra cable? If $20 is going to make or break you being able to pay your mortgage then you shouldn't own an iPhone. Now to the point of this thread. I believe what most people are talking about is the same thing that is happening to me. The error message is popping up when nothing is plugged in to the phone and the only thing that was plugged in to the phone was an Apple product. It is not a cable issue, it is a software or phone issue. I have Applecare and they are taking care of me for the trouble I have had. Apple is doing the right thing and has great customer service. That is why I am willing to pay a few extra bucks for accessories.

I am just irritated by the continued comments that have nothing to do with the issue of this particular post. If you are not having the problem why even comment. I am also tired of the ignorant comments regarding paying $20 for accessories. Just because I spent the money for an iPhone and iPad does not mean I intend to get reemed on accessories. If the battery life were not so half *** on Apple products I would not need all the extra charging cords. IF the apple charging cables were as high quality as the hardware, they would not destruct so easily. HOWEVER, the battery life ***** and the battery cords that come with the Apple products destruct easily. SO if I am going to have to invest in having cables at work, in my car and in my purse - then I am going to bargain shop. All the people making comments about buying genuine cables obviously are the same people who never bargain shop and pay full price for clothes, groceries, etc. Surely they do not purchase store brand goods or use coupons or God forbid shop on Amazon.

@agfor3 This is the most obnoxious comment in the entire thread. Your entire reply did not offer potential troubleshooting or insight - rather just advised others that you are being taken care of due to purchasing Apple support.

Lower the levels of self importance and realise that this is a support community rathen than a fanboi section.

@cs3110. Wow. When I read your post it offers no insight to any problem related to Appl products. If you take another 10 minutes to read my post you will realize that I tried to keep the discussion on point to what the original person who posted was having trouble with. This is an issue about an error message and people turned it into over paying for accessories. Get out of this discussion if you don't have anything to say about the topic.

People, let's focus on the issue.

I've resolved it on Iphone 5, but on the Iphone 5s. (both on IO& 7.0.3 and 7.0.4).

If you unplug the phone then plugin the phone, acknowledge the error, then with blackscreen (not off), you plugin the phone, acknowledge the error, then acknowledge the error again after unlocking screen, then unplug, plugin, unplug, plugin, unplug, initiate shutdown, during shutdown plugin the phone. After starting the phone, you repeat above steps 1x or 2x and it will fix the issue.

It will re-appear again in few days, but you will just need to unplug the phone, and plug it in.

However, this does not work for Iphone 5s and I tried everything under the sun.

IOS 7.0.4 - does not deal with this issue.

@agfor3. Again, This is a support community that is designed to help apple users compile troubleshooting techniques and potential insight to problems in order to help others and help Apple obtain trends and known issues.

Your attempt to "keep the discussion on point" by shaming people for not wanting to spend additional money on new chargers and apple support is passive aggressive and elitist to say the least.

bolster your ego somewhere else please.

And no one has commented on the issue I noted: since the 7.0.3 update I can no longer charge my iPhone 5 from my (work) PC - regardless of which cable I use--only from a Mac. I haven't updated to 7.0.4 yet, so am not sure if this has been fixed.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Has anyone here who IS interested in troubleshooting updated yet? Any changes re: these issues?

Nov 18, 2013 10:59 AM in response to SamsMochi

This happened to me a few days ago

-I've only used Apple chargers

-My phone wasn't plugged in when this message appeared

-If it's a software issue, well I can't fix it because my phone won't charge and wouldn't connect to my Mac

-Therefore I'm sending it to Apple to hopefully receive a refurbished phone (Although I feel like out of fairness I should be given a brand new phone as it isn't remotely my fault this happened.)

However
this error begs the quetion of what happens to those who aren't under warranty? I'm surprised Apple isn't recognizing this problem more publicy.
