iPhone 5s 'This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably...' help?

What is happening here?

I keep getting this stupid message even when no charger is plugged in!

I'm using the official charger that came with the iphone 5s box. I have other lightning connectors and thought maybe switching them would fix it but it hasn't.

Is there something wrong with my 5s? Do I need to clean the port on the bottom of the phone? I've only had the 5s for about a week. I am using official apple chargers.

This started happening after my batter drained and I put the phone on charge. Is it a software bug?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.s. The message ONLY appears when it is not on charge. Which is studpily weird.

I to am getting this same error appear constantly when my phone hasn't got anything plugged into it. This has only started to appear since the latest update on my phone. All my products I use to charge my phone are all original apple products, nothing is 3rd party or cheaper version so they cant use this as an excuse. There doesnt seem to be any pattern to when this error message appears, it can happen constantly for an hour or two and then dissappear for 5-6 hours!!! I am certainly heading to my local Apple store this weekend for a huge moan!!!!! A company as big as apple should not have errors like this appear!!!

Doesn't Apple have the largest cash reserves of any US company? Why do they feel the need to squeeze more money from their faithful customers with this proprietary stuff. I need an xtra data cable for home, and a car charger. Here in Canada, bought from the Apple store is $100ish, plus tax!!!! I can get an aftermarket Lightning cable from the corner store for $9.99 as opposed to $50!! I think I will return my 5s to greedy Apple, and just go back to my old 4. :>(

@Buck Rogers @ Drezin What does capitalism have to do with this? Why are poeple insisting on making this an Apple greed issue? There are people that are getting the error with nothing plugged in? What does that have to do with capitalism, or Apple trying to force customers to only use their charging cables? Nothing. These type of irrational statements make me think "Troll" before I think "Upset Apple Customer'.

I personally use a Rocketfish 6in flat cable from Best Buy daily with my iPhone 5 7.0.4. Running from the back of my Mac Mini connected to a 15ft USB extender without issue. There are 3 iPhone 5's iPad 3 and iPad mini in my house using an assortment of knock off cables without problems.

Also @Buck Rogers what lightning to usb charger are you using for 50.00? On the Candian Apple store website the 2 meter Lighning to usb cable is listed as 35.00 canadian? Not 50.00? The standard 1meter cable is 21.00. So again are you trolling, or actually an upset Apple customer?

If Apple would never have intoduced the chip, or whatever is used to identify them as "Certified" into these cables, we would not be having this discussion. I have not bought any cables from apple, nor do I intend to. These prices were given to me by co-workers and others from discussions. Apple customers tend to be brand loyal. IMAO, apple does not need to cash in this way.

@jcs2305, Speaking of trolling, if you have no issues, or relevant information related to this discussion, why are you even posting?

Some people here are complaining that Apple jacks up the prices on their products, seemingly unfairly, and acting like it's some horrible action. Apple is just doing what they can to make more money, i.e., the idea of capitalism. If anything, I'm defending Apple, criticizing capitalism.

As to it being irrelevant to the OP? It is. I'm not the one who started the whole thing, nor would I care if I did. Frankly, people who complain about going off topic are a bore.

The static thing worked for me!

Couldn't get my iPhone 5 to sync with iTunes at all (literally it wouldn't even mount!). All I kept getting was that same error message, despite the fact that the cable I was using was the original one supplied by Apple with my iPhone 5. I even tried my iPad (4th Gen) cable with the same result.

So I took off the plastic iPhone case, let it stand for a minute whilst (and tried not to build up any static additional with my hands (lol), then tapped the back of the phone a couple of times and tried again. Bingo!

My advice; if this doesn't work for you right away, try a few more times before giving up completely!

Thanks allbop!

And do the hokie pokie....

You shouldn't have to do all that. My guess is there is something loose and all that knocking it around made a connection again.

My point about the case was it had a plastic/rubber port protector that inserted into the phone when not in use. According to the apple genius (aka kid at the apple store) this apparently triggers a sensor in the port making the phone think it was plugged in. But since there was no electronics, starting with new code in ios 7.0.2, it was not a compatible device. I have cut the protector off and it's probably been a month without issue. BodyGlove in the meantime has sent me a replacement case with the same port protector. It's been TOTALLY redesigned mainly for the 5s and the port protect appears shorter. Since my original modified case is working fine I haven't swapped it to confirm.

@Buck Rogers I originally came to this thread to help a co-worker. If you would have taken the time to look at the previous posts. So I am not sure how exactly that is trolling? Also to your point..you posted a rant

I get emails when new responses come in so I take a look to see if there is anything else to try. That was how I got involved with this thread to begin with. I tried cleaning the connector area on the phone with alcohol, made sure that there were no debris. Her issue was that the message was coming on after removing the cord, or randomly while the phone was idle. I mentioned what I was using with my phone to give an example of how ridiculous it was, and is, for people to keep making this an Apple greed thing, which is exactly what you did. As well as detailing what phone I have and what chargers I use was as to an example of someone using aftermarket chargers daily not getting the same result.

If this was something Apple was intentionally doing as of 7.X.X update, as people have insinuated, then it would be happening to every device, not just some.

Conincidentally my co-worker isn't having the issue anymore as of the last couple of days? The only change that I can see as making a difference is that she changed cases? Neither had the rubber piece as jnm565 mentioned he was able to work around. So I am not really sure what the cause was. Maybe it was static or a little bug in the software.

Hopefully it won't come back.

Wow, I guess I got lucky.
I had this same problem from a charger that just came out of the box... humans are faulty, wires are faulty 😉.. I just got on a chat support with an Apple rep, and told her what is wrong and that my friend's chargers work just fine with it. Instead of asking a bunch of questions, she just said, "Oh no! well that's probably just a faulty charger then, we can replace that for free." I have an appointment in a few hours to pick it up.

It's not your phone at all, it's probably the charger. Ask for a new one.
