network print problem

My old MBP died alas and buying a new one I saw to my dismay that I couldn't remain with 10.6 as it came with 10.8 by default.

One of the main features of this release is that I can't print anymore via the network with my other MBP 10.7. The Laserjet 1300 printer is shared, I can print no problem from my USB connection and is seen by the other computer. The job just sits there with "trying to connect to the computer". Actually logging into it is no problem; A to B and B to A.

I checked the HP site and there are no drivers listed for 10.8, any clues? Thanx in advance for any help

OK did as suggested. Cleared (on client) all printers, set Default Printer to same name as Bonjour on server, could not select IPP or Generic PS but selected HP LaserJet 1300. It accepted it. Sent a print job to it and same problem:

Trying to connect to printer

I then tried to select IP printer and gave it the IP address of the server, but that of course produced the same result.

At a loss here...

Very strange, the only error message is:

E [30/Sep/2013:10:47:21 -0800] [cups-deviced] PID 21398 (pdf) stopped with status 86!

A 71 Cuda 440 is a very old car...but what a beauty, 🙂 I'd gate to have to part with it,

I just had a thought, what if the client (10.7.x) becomes the server for the printer and the current server (10.8.x) bcomes the client. I know kind of like dropping a 383 into the Cuda but... maybe that would save the printer...

I don't have a 10.8 plus a 10.7 Mac to confirm this, but it works for my 10.8 mac to a 10.4 Mac.

The printer address for an IPP printer looks like this:

ipp://192.168.2.7:631/printers/queue_name_on_server*

I think, like Linc, that the Bonjour name might be the queue name, but I would go to the server Mac to confirm it.

*(yup, the /printers/queue_name part is specified in the RFC "standard" for IPP. CUPS normally fills this in automatically)

Problem is I don't know what the port number is that the USB connects to. By looking at the USB Hardware I find:

hp LaserJet 1300:

Product ID: 0x1017

Vendor ID: 0x03f0 (Hewlett Packard)

Version: 1.00

Serial Number: 00CNCB709976

Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard

Location ID: 0x1a124200 / 6

Current Available (mA): 500

Current Required (mA): 2

1284 Device ID: MFG:Hewlett-Packard;CMD:PJL,MLC,BIDI-ECP,PCL,POSTSCRIPT,PCLXL;MDL:hp LaserJet 1300;CLS:PRINTER;DES:Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1300;MEM:8MB;COMMENT:RES=1200x1;

Using 631 gives me an error "client error not possible". So it could be a port mapping issue. Can you point me to how to get the right port number?

Thank you again for your help

Linc - I apologize for "stomping on" your thread here. :-)

Siberian, my attempt at help was factual but not helpful.

go to the server Mac (with the printer connected) and go to System Prefs > Print & Scan.

Single-click on the printer you are sharing, so it shows on the right side of the dialog window.

Now click on Options and Supplies. What shows as Device Name is otherwise called the Queue name. Make note of that.

Now on the client, click ( + ) Add printer, then click IP and select IPP protocol, and enter IP address, and Queue (Name), and choose driver.

Finish and try it.

First of all thank you both Linc and Greg for taking the time to help. Alas nothing works and there is definitely a problem with 10.8.6 as it was working perfectly between 10.6.8 and 10.7.x in its current configuration.

Greg, I tried what you suggested in your post above but it remains as "connecting to printer" as the sole message. There are no further messages in the cups error log since my post above. Meaning that though it wasn't able to print anything and just "hung", no error messages were posted to the log.

The last thing to try is to reverse client/server. Meaning place HP printer on 10.7 MBP as server and configure the 10.8 MBP as client and see if that works.

I'll report back later today when I have a chance to do the swap. Again thank you for your helpful suggestions.
