Anyone tried updating to quicktime pro using OS 10.4.11?

I'm running OS 10.4.11 on a G5 PPC and I want to upgrade my version of QuickTime Player 7.6.4 to QT 7 pro. According to Apple's web site, I must have at least OS 10.5 to upgrade. Is that actually a fact?

Just wondered if anyone has successfully tried upgrading their version of QT Player to the latest QT 7 pro on a system running 10.4?

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11), G5 Quad Core 10.5GB Ram

No. You can upgrade any version of QT 7 to QT 7 Pro as long as you have a valid QT 7 Pro key. The only thing you have to ensure is that the version of the QT 7 player installed on your system is compatible with the Mac OS X version you are running. I.e., the Mac OS X version installed on your platform will determine the latest version of QT 7 that is compatible with your system. For instance, the latest version of QT 7 compatible with Mac OS X v10.3 is QT 7 v7.5; for Mac OS X v10.4 is QT 7 v7.6.4; for Mac OS X v10.5 is QT 7 v7.7; and for Mac OS X v10.6, v10.7, or v10.8 is QT 7 v7.7.1. Conversly, QT 7 v7.6.4 can be used on systems operating under Mac OS X v10.4.11 (Tiger) through Mac OS X v10.5.8 (Panther) but running Panther is not a mandatory requirement.

There is no "latest version of QT 7 Pro." The QT 7 Pro key just unlocks the editing/converion features built into your current Mac OS X version/installed version of the QT 7 player app. If you want to run a later version of the QT 7 player than that allowed by your current operating system, then you must upgrade your Mac OS X version first but the same QT 7 Pro key would grant access to editing/conversion features in either situation.

Hey John!

Thanks loads for the info! Much appreciated, I never did understand that until you completely explained it to me. I just upgraded it to Pro.

Funny thing is, I had asked the Apple Store and they never explained how it worked. They simply told me that the upgrade wouldn't work with 10.4.11 and I needed to have at least 10.5 on my machine????. 😕Go figure!

Glad to help. Just wish I was more awake when I typed my response. (I.e., reference to "Panther" above should have read "Leopard" but I assume you understood correctly anyway.)

The basic idea for your operating system is to simply allow the update software to upgrade the QT player to match your Mac OS X version and then apply the key to that version. As to the Apple Store people, what they probably meant was that you would have to upgrade your operating system if you wanted to upgrade to and use the "latest version" of QT 7 Pro available for your particular Mac platform.

In any case, glad to hear all went well.

Yes, I think your right about that. To be honest, because of my lack of understanding of how it worked, I most likely posed the question to them incorrectly. Incorrect question = incorrect answer.😢

Still, YOU understood what I wanted.🙂

Thanks for the help.

Do you know if QT Pro will import audio tracks from iTunes into movies?

Not in the sense of doing so automatically in the same manner as other apps like GarageBand or iMovie. But, yes, you can do so manually.

When I try to paste the iTunes audio file into a QT movie, it only creates a "text" track with the name of the audio file. Won't create a new audio track?

Try opening the source file in QT 7 Pro, select the entire track or the portion thereof you wish to paste into the video file, use the Command-C or Edit men "Copy" option to copy the data (i.e., a reference that ponts to the date), select the target video, move the playhead to the desired insertion point, either use Command-V, the Edit menu "Add", or Edit menu "Add to Selection and Scale" option (as needed) to paste new audio to your target file, and Save or Export the final product as you may require.

I'm wondering if this is normal or not.

I suspect it may be normal for the workflow you employed. Basically, it sounds like the data reference was only to the audio data filename and not to the data itself. That is why you have to open the data in a separate QT "player" and copy a reference to the actual data to get it to paste/load into the new file. Also be aware that audio can be copied from other files that contain more than just audio. In this case, simply open the source file in QT 7 Pro, extract the audio track you want to a new "player" window, and then follow the instructions above as if audio had been in an audio file.
