how do i get my built in camera to work with either skype or gchat?

How do I get the built-in camera to work with either skype or gchat? My friends and family do not have apple products and cannot use FaceTime. Since getting my macbook air I have been completely disconnected from them because I am unable to video chat anymore. How can I fix this?
